Last week I completed my 9th production of the year, Aladdin : The Pantomime with Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society. I’ve learnt so much about my body, different acting styles, and in the last week just how awesome children are and how good it is to entertain and provide fun to others. I was also brought back to reality with a bump with an audition the day after we closed. Ah well, as is life! This last week has been an excellent week! I delivered a passionate Ignite Cardiff talk at the Glee Club and had some people reach out afterwards for help in achieving their own goals! I was thrilled. I then went on to host two Tenovus Lovelight concerts in Carmarthen and Pontypridd... where I ended up singing! I put out a public vote on Twitter for two categories on which to talk about today! Ageing and Changing and Dealing with Conflict. Ageing and Changing won the vote! In this weekly recap I talk over a conversation I had this past week about how ageing changes our bodies but how our mind doesn’t change at the same rate. I was asked by a friend to give my point of view of what a sense of belonging means to me in a work context. This beautifully linked to a quote in a play that I saw last week, Art, by Yasmina Reza. (Paraphrased) “If I am who I am because I am who I am, then I am who I am. However, if I am who I am because you are who you are then I am not who I am.” This linked me to conversations I’ve had about expectation v reality and how living life striving for things and titles may actually not be beneficial to us. Living by values is beneficial to us. There’s a lot to condense into 10 minutes but I hope you find it informative. In this episode I go a little into expectation and how that can damage us. Particularly if an outcome is linked to another person or object. I ran out of time but I was going to talk about my trek to Machu Picchu and how the expectation of the last site, Michu Picchu itself was very impressive, but I enjoyed the journey. And as I had very little preconceived notion everything was still full of awe and I’m like my outlook. I’m rarely disappointed. I hope these thoughts help you and please share with others. When I pressed record today I really didn’t know what I was going to talk about. As soon as I started talking I realised I had lots to talk and could have easily doubled the length and only haven’t because I share these on IGTV as well! I think I need to Re-jig my process! Today is World Mental Health day and I’m bringing you a bonus episode of the HelloTomDyer experience from a morning after I didn’t feel good. Those who know me, and those who follow this on Instagram or podcast probably think I have the world at my feet and I’m indestructible; and on the whole, I’m pleased to say that generally speaking I am good. I love my job, I have good friends, I follow and love my passion and get to perform. Even with all of this going for me I still get down days and my self-esteem and thoughts get the better of me. This is a recording from the following day after my blip, or whatever you want to call it. So it’s not as raw as it could have been. Last weekend I took part in the Cardiff Half Marathon - 13.1 miles / 21kms. It wasn’t my first, and probably won’t be my last, but hopefully I will learn to prepare much more successfully, rest up and eat properly. I'm very lucky in my job that I get to share what I do with people who may find what I do beneficial to them or their loved ones. You'll hear in this episode how I've recently been to a Bladder Cancer Support Group that meets in Maggie's Centre in Cardiff and how I talked to them for an hour! I go on to talk about more things I'm passionate about and how it gives me drive and direction. I really do consider myself very lucky but if you don't feel like that you're in the position to be passionate and you're unhappy about that do something about it - even if it is scary, embarrassing, brand new to you. You might not like it. It might not live up to expectation but give everything in your mind a shot. Last week I recorded another episode of 5 Questions with my friend Lizzie (@polkadotmenagerie) - more on that later - but before that started I was collecting some B roll footage when a lady and her chippy chips started talking to me about what I was filming and what I was hoping to achieve and we had a very pleasant conversation about how unique we all are, even I shared moments, and how I believe that everyone is extraordinary. We deliberated over the thoughts of shared memories and how these change over time until we eventually agreed on the same point. Even though the finer details might change, the overall emotion shared by a group remains forever. She’s been holidaying with her friends for over 40 years and remembers how she’s made to feel around them and I thought that was beautiful and completely agree with her. I recorded this episode last week while still on my holiday high while travelling from Pembrokeshire to Llandudno. Now I know how beautiful Wales is but even more so when I’m viewing it as a tourist. I’m currently on my travels and find myself in Verona with my sister having spent two days in Venice and two days driving from the UK to get there. I’m having a blast and soaking up the scenery. Making the most of the EU relationship we have at the moment. Verona I’m reliably informed is the city of love because of the Romeo and Juliet story here and it’s made me ponder my relationship with love. These last couple of weeks and months have truly been very special. Jesus Christ Superstar closed on Saturday and I cannot believe I was not only part of the summer festival again, but part of something truly terrific. I have loved the whole process and feel like I’ve improved as a performer over the entire period. I got to share the stage with pure talent and I am very grateful to have shared the experience with them. Thank you Rich and Rob for your stewardship and let me walk on that stage again! It truly is an honour every single time. To everyone who made it so special, cast, crew, festival team and audiences - thank you. The response was every audience was fantastic One piece of feedback I had after the Saturday matinee (paraphrased): “I feel closer to my faith having watched that as I can see what the man, who I believe is my saviour, suffered for us.
