Highlander Rewatched

The Rewatchers sack 2020 like its an ancient Mesopotamian village in the confusing and intensely gross first episode of Big Finnish Audio Season 2, all about the Four Horsemen! Kronos captures a Watcher and randomly tells his own life story. Along the way, Kronos shares the (entirely too) intimate details of his first death, sets in motion an interlocking web of absurd revenge schemes, and says the word "brother" more times than the Hollywood Hulk. The Rewatchers try to untangle the Gordian knot of this plot, contrast this offering to Season 1, and talk at length about the crucial plot point of this season: drilling holes in people's heads (you read that right, it's all about trepanation baby!).

Christmas is coming early this year, because Season 1 of the Big Finish Audio Series is finally over! In this baffling season finale, a bizarre cult led by an evil architect recreates the plot of Ghostbusters in an effort to... (~sigh) resurrect the Kurgan by somehow forcing Duncan to fight on holy ground. The Rewatchers discuss the mechanics of blessing a torture chamber, try to figure out where immortals go when they die, and try their hardest to go out on a positive note.

Mac is called to the police station to evaluate an antique sword... that’s about all that happens in this utterly stakes-less turd. Duncan uses this opportunity to make a series of wild assumptions about Japanese detectives who may or may not exist, draw dubious legal conclusions, and reminisce about the time he was captured by a cruel samurai in Japan with a white-guy-Master-Splinter voice. The Rewatchers break down Mac’s reckless museum arson, discuss the origins of Dunky’s catchphrase, and hope that the Seacouver PD implements a suicide watch because Duncan is so needlessly mean.

Ohhhhhhh boy. A mysterious immortal woman with a magical STD that causes immortals to spontaneously combust(?!?) escapes a sadistic science cult that imprisoned her. Mac heroically steps in to... condemn her to an eternity of torture and experimentation? Yup- you read that right! The Rewatchers discuss Mac’s relationship with a bizarre coroner, dish about diamonds, and decry the “Saw”-levels of torture porn that seem to permeate this audio series.

The Rewatchers kick off their coverage of the Big Finnish Highlander Audio Series, starring none other than Adrian Paul. In this befuddling tale, Pieter Gatland, visits Mac once every decade to beat the crap out of him (and maybe kiss?), but never takes his head. Also, Mac meets (and drops savage burns on) the irritatingly named "Grandfather of Swords," an immortal who first died at over 100-years old and has no apparent role in the story. Also, Mac engages in heavy petting and pillow talk with himself. Also.... wow, there is a lot to unpack here! Tune in for the Rewatchers deep dive on the puzzling sound effects in this piece, discussion of quickening magic (again), and stunning a "frierworks" display.

The Rewatchers bid a bittersweet farewell to Season 5 by recapping the highlights (and lowlights), busting out some stats, and drinking entirely too much questionable beer. When an ancient Zoroastrian demon awakens after a millennium of slumber, it has nothing better to do than confuse Duncan MacLeod into screwing up his own life. In flashback, a hermit sits in a cave for 600 years so that he can have an incomprehensible 90-second chat with Mac, that ends with an improbable self-decapitation. The Rewatchers wonder why Joe and Methos are such bad friends, watch Fox News to figure out the monster’s plan, and bid a tearful farewell to a friend of the pod.

Also, an immortal trash lord farts and burps a lot and then unexpectedly vanished from the plot. The Rewatchers discuss whether Fitz is a Catholic terrorist, wonder if this episode is canon, and groan over Mac’s apparent friendship with... Winston Churchill?
