    The lack of information on the current stage of the Limerick to Scariff Greenway has been branded as "disappointing". Killaloe Municipal District has revealed that a peer review of the preferred route corridor of the long-awaited greenway has taken place and public consultation on the project will be held on the peer review group and Transport Infrastructure Ireland have concluded discussions. On foot of a motion tabled by Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes at this week's meeting of East Clare representatives, it's been agreed that Waterways Ireland will be invited to attend the next meeting. Councillor Hayes says landowners in particular deserve more detail on the plans.

    The family of Aoife Johnston have met with the Health Minister to press for a statutory inquiry into her death after waiting hours for treatment at University Hospital Limerick. The 16-year-old from Shannon died from bacterial meningitis on December 19th, 2022 after waiting more than twelve hours on chairs to see a doctor in the ED, despite presenting with an urgent GP referral letter querying sepsis. Aoife’s death has resulted in two inquiries and disciplinary proceedings against six senior staff over the circumstances of her final hours. Thursday’s meeting with Health Minister, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill came about due to a request from the Johnston family, who wrote to her through their solicitor last month.     Donald Trump says he will attempt to get US pharmaceutical companies back from Ireland. It comes after the US President signed an executive order to impose a 25 per cent tariff on cars imported into the United States. He sees tariffs as a tool to raise revenue, to offset his promised tax cuts, and to revive a long-declining US industrial base. The budget is supplemented by various Government funding streams, while a total of €3.21 million comes from the local authority's own resources. The increased funding is welcome given that newly-released figures show the county's roads maintenance works have gone over budget by €2.42 million in the last three years, with 2024's works alone going €1.48 million over budget. AirNav Ireland, which oversees the safety of all flights arriving and departing Shannon, Cork and Dublin Airports has conferred 23 new cadets at a ceremony in the Strand Hotel this lunchtime.   • Belfast 'Glider' Proposed As Shannon Rail Link Solution

    A Northern Irish public transport service dubbed "The luas on wheels" has been proposed as a cost effective alternative to the Shannon Rail Link. The 'Glider' which is a rapid transit intercity bus system, with a light tram design and capacity for over 100 passengers in a single carriage, was first rolled out in Belfast in 2018 at a cost of €120m. Although the Government has set a target of providing rail connectivity to Shannon Airport by 2030, a delegation of elected representatives and officials are expected to visit Belfast to test the Glider's feasibility. Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley is confident it can work here.

    The HSE is being urged to bring Clare ambulance patients to Galway where possible, during periods of severe overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. It's estimated that on average 1,820 patients from this county attended UHL's ED every month last year, with similar trends expected this year. By contrast, last month, 160 patients from Clare were admitted to University Hospital Galway's Emergency Department. HSE Regional Health Forum West member Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Antoinette Baker Bashua says the measure should be explored while Clare awaits the construction of its own ED.

  • Hospital-Standard Care For Patients In The Comfort Of Their Own Homes

    A new Virtual Ward in University Hospital Limerick which uses technology to provide patient care at home has saved more than 2,000 inpatient bed days since its introduction last summer. A total of 325 patients have been cared for at the Virtual Ward since July 1st, using technology to link them with UHL for monitoring two to three times daily - and in the process freeing up 2,053 bed-days for hospital treatment of more acutely ill inpatients.
