  • How Spencer Seabrooke is Saving The World

    25/04/2020 Duração: 15min

Spencer is a highliner, one of the best in the world. He's a freesoloist, walking across 1'' webbing thousands of feet in the air without a tether. He's also incredibly handy, building, modifying, engineering nearly anything with whatever is available. He's been telling us to 'get involved' for every second of 6 years. And this really is the secret that we need right now, to get involved in our own maturation, our own communities, our own food systems, our own shadows, our own cultures. Akira the Don told me yesterday, "politics are downstream of culture, culture is downstream of vibes". We gotta take our culture back by taking back our vibes. We gotta get involved in how we feel, how we act, how we think. We literally have to get involved in our own evolution as a species; each person growing up and taking responsibility and thus raising the tides, bringing all boats up into a new level of personhood, a new way of being, thinking and doing. • Have We Gone Too Far?

    25/04/2020 Duração: 30min

Have we overreacted to Covid? Have we given our power away to coronavirus? This is a genuine inquiry that I'm in. This episode I talk about what its like to use a tool like world governments to address social issues and our pandemic, I talk about the fact that where I live, there is no pandemic, and that what NYC needs to do to control their outbreak is very different than what we need to be doing here in Oregon to respond to our own situation. • Zak Stein - A Time Between Worlds

    22/04/2020 Duração: 01h39min

Dr. Zak is a fucking saint. He's one of my biggest influences right now, which makes this episode truly special for me. He's an educational philosopher and author of ‘Education in a Time Between Worlds’ - a book that lays out how our education system went wrong, what wrong looks like today, what right might look like in the future and how we go about getting it right. It's an incredible book that has been so helpful and insightful lately. It's also somewhat prophetic, he lays out the essence of the metacrisis more than a year before covid brought the reality to a bigger audience’s doorstep. He is the Head of Academics at The Center for Integral Wisdom. His latest article, Covid19; A War Broke Out in Heaven went viral with its gentle but powerful proposition that we're in a battle over the future of human nature that is taking place in each of our hearts. A battle between the angel and devil that sits on each of our shoulders. In this episode, we talk about the role of intellectual mentorship, about fear of

  • Food System Fragility and Human Nature in Crisis - Shane Ward

    21/04/2020 Duração: 01h26min

Shane is a permaculturalist and agriculture consultant, and talking with him changed some of my perspectives on some big topics. In this episode he outlines that without a permanent system of agriculture, one that is truly sustainable, permanent civilization is impossible. We also talk about human nature and how it is typically misconstrued and weaponized against us. We talk about politicized science, the ecological impact of the coronavirus lockdown, which he argues that it is not big, because our agriculture has not been impeded or reformed in the midst of pandemic. Its an amazing talk I hope you enjoy it. Find Shane at www.actionecology.com Please support this show by sharing, subscribing and by leaving a review! It helps! Terry Patten is a lifelong anti-war and civil rights activist, turned spiritual teacher and philosopher. He's the co-author of Integral Life Practice and the author of A New Republic of the Heart. He's been a devotee, he's been a teacher. He's been an leader of peace movements and human potential movements. He's an OG, a legend, a wise mentor for a lot of us. This conversation is one of, if not the, most impactful conversations I've had on this show. Terry left me feeling seen and heard, loved and supported, empowered and encouraged. Rich, co-founder of The Hum (a non-heirarchical business consultancy), is back to talk about the differences, both positive and negative, with virtual and physical relationships. • Are you missing the point of Coronavirus?

    15/04/2020 Duração: 37min

There is a reality rarely seen, that shows the limits of our ability to understand the complexities that we live in. This concept, coined Hyperobjects by Timothy Morton, is a humble way of placing our own ability to understand complexity. This is coupled with the increasingly obvious reality that our old systems are simply not fit to address the problems and meet the needs of our global community, especially for the future which is unseen and unknowable. We're constantly solving for right where we are, which is leaving us a day late and a dollar short time and time again. My point in this episode is that there is a better way to think, a better way to frame the question, the problems. Instead of staying stuck in a Left/Right, Me/You, Us/Them battle where we're forced to take a multiple choice test (voting) between two futures that are bought and sold by greed and power by people who have never talked to us about it and who, frankly, don't give a fuck about us. This episode is an invitation into a global col

  • How the Web Shapes Communities - Howard Rheingold

    14/04/2020 Duração: 55min

Howard wrote his first article studying virtual communities 1987. Yes, 1987. That's before the official internet and long before anything that resembled what we know of today as social media. In 2012 he authored the book, Net Smart; How to Thrive Online, which laid out 5 essential literacies for users of digital communication and networks. He’s got a ton of great insights and perspectives on our current situation with Facebook and Google and Youtube. He’s hopeful it seems, and he doesn’t bash the tech itself. Rather, he tries to empower its users to see it for what it is, and to make the most of it. • The Only Way Through This - Peter Limberg

    12/04/2020 Duração: 01h02min

Peter is a philosopher and steward at The Stoa. He's got some really useful ideas about how we should be thinking right now, and more importantly, how we should be embodying our philosophies. We discuss stoicism, method acting, the memetic war, the culture war, his ideas about culture war 2.0, the difference between truth and truthfulness and why truthfulness is our only way to get through our current meta crisis. I really appreciate peter's work at the stoa and his time coming on the podcast. • Authentic Relating Power - Sara Ness

    10/04/2020 Duração: 01h16min

Sara founded Authentic Revolution, an organization spreading authentic relating toolkits (games, structures, ideas), to individuals, companies and groups. They also teach authentic leadership, which is a huge topic that we cover amidst coronavirus. She starts by sharing an authentic relating game with me, that we play together, that cuts straight into what we're both feeling. It was a vulnerable moment for me for sure. We then immediately go deep into why authenticity is important and powerful, why we lack it and what this lack does to our relationships. She shares a study about how authentic relating and emotional intelligence training on a Shell oil rig dropped the incidence of workplace accidents precipitously, and another about coal miners trapped in a mine and the unlikey emmergence of leadership. Through the episode, she invites me to share some of my own frameworks of thinking and my own thoughts on how her work relates to paragliding and the sports that I know and love. This was such a rewarding conve

  • Conspiracy & Fear of Tyranny

    02/04/2020 Duração: 01h03min

We need a collective action on Covid, but we're also afraid that what happened in Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia could happen here in America. We're afraid that the government will use this thing as a means to increase their power, to overreach into our lives and our liberties. We're afraid at the mere possibility that they created this entire fucking thing themselves. That they engineered the virus, released it in China, and didn't take early action deliberately. These are terrifying thoughts and I'm sympathetic of the people who have gone so far down this rabbit hole that they are disoriented, while still feeling certain that they know the truth of a massive cover up, a "plandemic". Some combination of legislative overreach, 5G cell phone towers, mandated vaccines and martial law make up their fears and their claims. I'm partial to these thoughts, honestly. The reality of tyranny and government propaganda goes back to the dawn of civilization, and we've seen it here in our own lives. We're at a critical time

  • Courage & Cooperation - Rich Bartlett

We talk about how systems change, from the individual then outward. We talk about non-hierarchical organizations, non-violence, small groups and the importance of group size, the dunbar number, microsolidarity, sovereignty, networks of trust and love, courage-how we get it and how we give it. We talk about some problems in the United States, scalability of tight night groups, the obsession of scalability, about rhythms instead of scheduling, practicing partner relationships, accepting all the parts of ourselves, self love and shadow work and so much more. • Dr. Annie Pendygraft - Cognitive Resilience, Meaning Making and Coronavirus

    31/03/2020 Duração: 01h15min

In this podcast episode with Dr. Annie, we talk about mental health, meditation and why it works, how our brains make meaning, how our brains make resilience, the importance of having space for sadness right now, anticipatory grief, some germ theory about covid-19, how a big bike crash cracked her open, curiosity and how it creates resilience, the unique vulnerabilities of a schizophrenic population, and so much more. This is a really practical episode and I think it provides great insight into how our brains work and how they’re likely working right now. Also, her insights help us understand how to make meaning and why that is so important. I really appreciate Dr. Annie’s work, (which seems daunting) her perspective, and her time coming on the podcast to help us all understand ourselves a little more. I also appreciate, most viscerally, her friendship and that light spunkiness that she has on tap. Love you Annie! Please support this show by sharing, subscribing and by leaving a review! It helps! • Jeff Shapiro - Bushplanes, Wingsuits and Unity

    27/03/2020 Duração: 01h44s

Jeff Shapiro has been obsessed with birds and flight for his entire life. This obsession has manifested itself in many ways in his life. He started hanggliding in late adolescence, traveling the world competing and putting thousands of flight hours under his glider. But that was only the beginning, since then he’s become a falconer, training birds to hunt with him, a wingsuit base jumper, flying from tall cliffs high in the mountains with just his body, a mountaineer and ice climber, a paraglide pilot and now a proud owner and jockey of a bush plane. He’s also a husband and father. He’s been a lot of places, done a lot of things and has seen some shit. He’s a friend of mine, we were both sponsored by KEEN Footwear for a number of years. I was lucky enough to be with him during a base jump off the Monkey Face at Smith Rock years ago. He’s a mentor to me, he has a deep knowledge of the weather and free flight, risk and mitigation. He lives in Missoula Montana. In this episode we talk about bush planes and the
