Jesus goes from town to town , but not to conquer. Instead his first priority is to heal

We read the call of the first four disciples and then go back in the story to notice what Jesus did prior to calling the first four.

A letter and a gospel story remind us of the importance of approaching the text, the message, and the creator with great humility.

Just after the miracle of the feeding of the 5000 and Jesus walking on water, crowds are hopping in boats and running across town to find Jesus. After telling them they are looking for something simply to get them through the day, Jesus offers them an alternative way of thinking and believing.

We read parts of three psalms that describe the power of worship in whatever space we are in. 

Carl and I read three psalms and discuss the range of emotions found in each one. We ask the classic questions, what does this say about God? what does it say about human beings? what does it say about the relationship between God and human beings>

After just returning from traveling two by two to share the message, Jesus' followers encounter a large crowd that overwhelms them. Jesus responds in a way that elevates their understanding of the gospel.

Disciples return from their journey to reach more followers. Hoping to withdraw with Jesus, they instead see a massive crowd pushing in on them. Realizing what that crowd needs, Jesus displays ultimate servant leadership. 

The very real and frightening implications of violence confront the followers of John the Baptist and the hearers of the message. Yet, God and followers persist.

After visiting several other villages to speak, heal the sick, and gather future leaders, Jesus returns to his hometown. The people are shocked at his ability given his background, do not react positively, and his power is severely limited. Despite that reaction, Jesus invites his leaders to go out in two's to share the word with others.

Jesus visits a village along the sea and changes the power dynamics forever.

Crossing the water, landing on the shore, Jesus encounters an important man and a vulnerable woman that desperately need hlep. 

Jesus asks the disciples to move on from a large crowd, to engage a different community that is across the water. They encounter a storm and the disciples question Jesus' commitment to them.
