Let's Talk Homeschool

This is the second in a four-part series where we are asking what's good, missing, broken, and evil in our culture. In this episode we focus on what is missing in culture that we can creatively contribute. We share three things that we believe are missing. These are things we also believe are possible for Christians and homeschooling families to add or contribute to the culture of our families, churches, and communities.

Americans tend to like things to be quick and easy. This certainly applies to meals (think microwaves, cereal, and "instant" oatmeal). What about homeschooling? Does the realization that educating your kids at home will be long and hard strengthen your resolve to stick with it? We certainly want you to persevere because the sacrifices are well worth it.

On May 23, 2021, Eric Carle passed away after a lifetime of achievements spanning 91 years. He is best known for his illustrated children’s books including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle is quoted as saying that he attempted to “…bridge the gap between the home and school...home represents...warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child…I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases, we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown…” Wow. I couldn't agree more. And what a pro homeschool statement.
