Bethel Christian Academy (Savage/Laurel) has been kicked out of the state’s school voucher program, because of its anti-LGBT views. The school calls that religious discrimination and is challenging the move in court. Bethel says it doesn’t discriminate in anyway, but according to the Sun, does have in the school’s handbook that marriage can only be between a man and a woman and that God assigns a gender to a child at birth. Other faith based schools still receive tax money for the voucher program, but none apparently have those beliefs actually written in the school handbook. I talked with the lawyer for the school, Christiana Holcomb on the case that could have major legal ramifications across the country.

Should marijuana be decriminalized? Should it be legalized? Is Marylyn Mosby right when she says it will prevent minorities from going to jail? Dr. Kevin Sabet, the former drug policy advisor to the Obama administration, says they all have it wrong. The numbers prove otherwise, and Mosby (and others) chose to ignore science in favor of marijuana businesses, whose only goal is to rake in profits by selling today’s extremely potent form of marijuana.

Just wanted to highlight the grace and decency of the Dvorak family. How brutal it must of been to watch for 6 weeks the rehashing of their son's murder. Step by step, over and over again. Then only to see a mistrial. The suspect Malik Mungo admits he was there, but says he didn't pull the trigger. Says he and a guy named "Goon"--just some acquaintance of the night, were walking around smoking pot looking to steal cars. He says "Goon" ran up to Sebastian, hit him, robbed him, shot him and left him to bleed to death on the street. The jury had enough doubt on the murder charge though he was convicted on 8 other counts. The reaction from David Dvorak was astonishing. He showed no anger to the jury or prosecutors and was hopeful of a different result in a retrial. But, he also pointed out that he was one of the lucky ones--noting that hundreds of families every year in Baltimore don't even get a trial for their loved ones.

Hot debate this morning with C4 on the Anne Arundel county decision to change how the Valedictorian is awarded in public schools. It will no longer solely be based on class rank. Now, if you maintain a GPA over 4.3, they will choose the valedictorian from that group (kids with GPA over 4.3) based on a student's character, leadership, scholarship, and service. I’m not losing sleep over this move. C4 thinks I’m soft… listen to our back and forth.

Talked with Bjorn Lomborg head of an environmental think tank in Copenhagen. He says the banning of plastic bags is counterproductive. Lomborg says one must reuse an organic cotton shopping bag 20,000 times before it will have less climate damage than a plastic bag. But also says if you want to shrink the number of plastic bags used…TAX it. Tax in Ireland shrunk use from 328 bags a person per year to just 21.

You’ve seen the signs on the way home from the beach that say “Bay Bridge Bound? Stay on 50”, well leaders in Queen Anne’s county are proposing making it a law! Commissioner Jim Moran says it’s a public safety issue for local police and fire. He told me this morning he’s going to push for a bill in Annapolis next year that would allow police to hand out tickets for leaving 50 in search of a quicker way home. He says already this year there have been 10-mile backups on 3 different Sundays. Should locals be able to block non-locals from driving on their roads???
