100NO 582- Blue Zones, Diets & Biohacks - Live Recording
26/05/2024 Duração: 01h21minWe recently ran a live online workshop busting the 3 big myths around Blue Zones, Diets & Biohacking. During this live workshop we discussed: ** Your genetics and ageing profile. ** To age or not to age like your parents? ** Why is it that Blue Zones residents experience less dementia, cancer and heart disease? ** The connection between diet and longevity. ** The role of supplements and biohacks in ageing well … Join us as Damian and Marcus lay out the the truth, bust the myths, and set you on the path to longevity, as shared with us by hundreds of centenarians, graceful agers and health professionals over more than a decade on the podcast and traveling to the Blue Zones. During this recording we referred to episode 11 with Mimi Kirk. You can listen to that episode here. OUR LONGEVITY EXPERIENCES TO IKARIA AND SARDINIA ARE COMING UP FAST! Do you have an itch to visit these Blue Zones? We have been taking small groups to the Greek Blue Zone of Ikaria since 2016, and more recently the Italian Blue Zone

100NO 581: Is Breakfast the Devil’s meal?
19/05/2024 Duração: 24minWith the rising popularity of fasting, has breakfast been demonized unfairly? What does it mean to be a breakfast eater today? Is it eggs and greens to kickstart your day like Marcus or is it an Espresso or two to tide you over to your first meal of the day, sometime around lunchtime when the hanger kicks in? Damo sees breakfast as an opportunity to provide fuel for the brain to get going for the day ahead, so that we can think clearly. An opportunity to help balance our moods, hormones and creating less stress within the body. Maybe breakfast isn’t for you and eating your calorie load across two meals in the afternoon works great for you. But if breakfast is the meal that you look forward to most and it helps you feel balanced, don’t skip it just because everyone else is doing it. One size does not fit all. 100NO 580: Urgency Culture: Real or Not Real?
12/05/2024 Duração: 27minMany years ago, Greg McKeown introduced us to the humble brag, but has the humble brag (we spoke about this on episodes 68 and 378) now found itself an older cousin called Urgency Culture? Do you find yourself unable to say NO just in case a better offer pops up and then find yourself over-committed and overwhelmed? Do you preface your answers to “How are you?” with ‘I’m busy!”. Do you drop what you are doing every time a message or a call comes through? Do you find yourself checking your phone and social media at every opportunity, just in case you miss out on something happening in the world around you? A sense of urgency can look very different from one person to another, but following on from a recent National Geographic article about responding immediately to texts, is it time to pause and find ways to counteract this urgency culture? In an increasingly connected world, urgency culture blurs the line between what is urgent and what is important. The Eisenhower Matrix is a great starting point as to how y

100NO 579: Alcohol - Vice or Villain?
05/05/2024 Duração: 22minAlcohol – What’s the truth? Does your body go into shutdown if you consume alcohol as Dave Asprey recently stated in this Instagram post. There is truth in the fact that alcohol is a toxin and it’s a toxin to the brain and the body has to clear it. But should it be so demonized that it is to blame for Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Diabetes and Cancer? Like most things, whether it be nutrition, movement or alcohol, we encourage you to be your own experiment. Some alcohol suits some better than others; some can handle one or two, others none. It’s the same wath coffee. Tune into how your body responds and choose accordingly. Be your own experiment. OUR LONGEVITY EXPERIENCES TO IKARIA AND SARDINIA ARE COMING UP FAST! 100NO 578: Longevity Wars
28/04/2024 Duração: 25minFollowing a recent instagram post by Dan Buettner who introduced a medical doctor to rebut Dave Asprey’s claims about oats, we ask if we are about to see the longevity space erupt in war. We can’t be sure who is throwing the first grenade. Was it Dave Asprey or is it Dan Buettner? Do we need to rush out and soak our oats for breakfast tomorrow to live to 100 and beyond? In our analysis of the Blue Zone diets, no other Blue Zone consumes oats regularly as part of their diet. If we look at Okinawa, they’re eating rice. If we look at Costa Rica, they’re having corn. What we do know is that it’s not nutrition alone that helps people live a long life. Despite us pitting longevity guru v longevity guru and the clickbait that we see daily, such conversations are raising people’s consciousness on what it takes to age well. Depending on how you want to approach longevity, we encourage you to find the model that best fits with your philosophy and then move in that direction. OUR LONGEVITY EXPERIENCES TO IKARIA A

100NO 577: Do Toxic Relationships Impact on Longevity?
21/04/2024 Duração: 38minIn a recent article, the oldest woman on the planet, María Branyas Morera, 115, said that the key to longevity is to stay away from toxic people. We know that the quality of relationships can have a large impact on the quality of our health but why do we often find ourselves in toxic situations, unable to step away? Do we get stuck because we can’t see a pathway out? Regardless if the toxic relationship is with others, food, money, or family; the biggest question we have to ask ourselves is, is what we are putting up with worthy of what we want in our lives? This episode discusses toxic relationships at length and acknowledges that often people don’t have the support in their lives to help them exit such a relationship. If this episode has triggered you, please have the courage to care about yourself enough to find your way out of the toxic situation. Organizations such as Rize Up, dedicated to supporting the many families affected by domestic and family violence, are able to help up. In this episode we re

100NO 576: From Giving to Others to Giving to Self with Anita Spehar
14/04/2024 Duração: 28minThis week we welcome long time listener, first time guest Anita Spehar onto the podcast. From working 10+hour days, 7 days a week to now traveling solo in her motorhome, Anita recognised that for much of her life she had been giving to others – from work to family and everything in between – and decided that for the next 12 months, she needed to make her life about giving to herself. The result? House sold. Motorhome purchased. Solo traveling around Australia, not to mention joining Damo and MP in both Ikaria and Sardinia on their upcoming 100 Not Out Longevity Experience. “Why wait for when you can’t do, do it while you can” is Anita’s new motto. As Anita says, “if you feel like you’re missing out on something, get your boots on and do it!” If you are like Anita, perhaps visiting Ikaria and Sardinia are on your must visit list of destinations to immerse yourself in the culture that epitomizes longevity and connection. 100NO 575: Are the Blue Zones Dead?
07/04/2024 Duração: 33minA question we are often asked is Are the Blue Zones Dead? Settle in with a cuppa as we discuss whether, as the older people die, will we see the Blue Zones die with them? Or do we follow those that are now 80 and 90, with access to improved infrastructure and technology and see the impact that such things have on their own longevity? Whether you think the Blue Zones are dead or alive, longevity remains as much about the top three things – purpose, engagement and movement as it is the avoidance of chronic disease. Does the strong connection to rituals, land, family and food continue to hold those in the Blue Zones in good stead to continue on their longevity path and continuing to be our greatest teachers on what longevity is? In this episode, we mention chronic diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s and the impact that these have on longevity stats. We recommend you revisit episode 42 of 100 Not Out and our conversation around Dementia and Alzheimer’s with Professor Michael Woodward. Want to hear more abo

100NO 574: More Diet Propaganda
31/03/2024 Duração: 26minThere certainly has been a theme in our recent episodes over the rise of social media as a way to educate and influence our health choices! A friend of the podcast, David Wolfe who featured in episode 6 of 100 Not Out, recently shared a reel on his instagram account which resulted in over 900 shares and 730 comments. This reel was not a ‘ how to boil a frog’ post but aimed at alarming the viewers that even when dead, animals feel pain too! What type of impact are click bait reels having on people’s decisions when it comes to their own health? If you’ve watched the video, frog laksa might be off the menu at your place tonight! Further to that, with the emergence of AI, how are we to determine what is true? Are we accepting information somewhat too easily, rather than doing our own research? Join us as we discuss if the rise of health advice on social media and AI generated articles could swing the needle back in favor of our once trusted face to face relationship with our trusted GP or allied health practit

100NO 573: Is Ageing Amazing?
24/03/2024 Duração: 25minIs Ageing Amazing? We certainly think so! In the media and around the water cooler, you’ll hear plenty of talk on the negativity of ageing. Do you disqualify yourself from ageing well or do you embrace it? Do you look at ageing well from a vanity perspective or from what you are still able to do? It’s often said that we are living longer, but dying slower. Are you too busy to work on how you want to age? Too busy to move? Too busy to eat well? Too busy to embrace your community? Too busy to spend time doing what you love? What is it that you are doing today to help you embrace the ethos that ageing is amazing? For many, the end is very long. Certainly not for Bill Stevens who, at 95 years young, is still teaching water aerobics at his local gym and inspiring many. You can catch his recent appearance on Nine News Melbourne here. You can also be re-inspired by our chat with Bill on episode 220 here. Don’t buy into the lie that ageing isn’t amazing! Be amazing with us in Ikaria and Sardinia! We are in Ikari

100NO 571: Inspired Comparison: Who Do You Compare Yourself To?
10/03/2024 Duração: 23minSinead O’Connor told us that Nothing Compares to You, but who are you comparing yourself to? Comparing yourself to someone that you saw on social media could put you on an unhealthy pathway, both physically and emotionally. But can taking inspiration from those around you in key areas of life which are important to you – movement, aging, living well, health, golf – be a tool for making better decisions on how you live your own life? Join us today as we take inspiration from those around us, and discuss how much comparison and judgment to those around us can impact on our ability to make either an empowered or disempowered decision. Don’t let the statement ‘I should’ get in the way of living your best life. If this is you, you may want to listen to episode 227 where we talk about this.’ If you find yourself being judgy judgy when it comes to comparing yourself to others, revisit episodes 270 and 444. They say comparison is the thief of all joy, but taking inspired comparison from others when done well can be a

100NO 570: Cholesterol: The Good and The Bad
03/03/2024 Duração: 25minBoy oh boy did episode 568 break the internet! We know that the media’s clickbait approach to health can be confusing, but what about when you see your health practitioner and you leave your appointment feeling confused and like you are just a number in the system? A long term health aware listener left a recent appointment with an integrative GP feeling exactly that way with regards to recent blood results concerning her good and bad cholesterol particles. Be prepared to have your mind blown as Damo helps us navigate cholesterol – how we absorb a fraction of cholesterol from what we eat, how our body makes cholesterol and how the liver manufactures cholesterol as a result of physical, emotional and mental stimulus and triggers that it receives from our nervous system. You’ll walk away from this week’s episode stressing less about the steak, aka cholesterol bomb, you had for last night’s dinner and focusing on adding in more happiness, laughter, fun, movement and sunshine so that we can manufacture our good

100NO 569: Does Eating Out Make You Die Sooner?
25/02/2024 Duração: 22minFollowing on from episode 568, Marcus shared a recent clip from Dan Buettner who believes the first step in getting healthier and increasing your longevity is to eat at home. There is no denying that there are numerous benefits to getting back into the kitchen, but have we now gone from food scare to eating out scare? Will eating out make you die sooner? What about the connection and socialisation which can be achieved through sharing a meal out with family and friends, laughing and having a conversation? Isn’t the value of a meal maximized by sharing it with someone else? Join us as Damo and Marcus bring common sense to the conversation and share their top three tips for eating out and doing it well. Do you want to eat out with us in Ikaria and Sardinia? We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. 100NO 568: Vegan v Carnivore? Is ‘Food Scare’ eating you alive?
18/02/2024 Duração: 30minNow more than ever, there is a litany of conflicting views when it comes to health, in particular what to put on your plate. Will that skinless chicken breast I ate for lunch give me diabetes? Will I become an addict if I eat animal protein? Can I ever eat meat again if I identify as a vegan? With so many ‘experts’ at our fingertips, are they influencing us? Scaring us? Or dampening our ability to think critically for ourselves? Settle in for the ride as Damian and Marcus discuss a recent podcast they listened to where an ‘expert’ made these outrageous comments. What is the damage that such clickbait has on people when it comes to deciding what best to add to their plate? As the pendulum on what to eat continues to swing from veganism to carnivore, does the truth on what best to eat lay somewhere in the middle? Leave your preconceived notions of food at home and join us on our Longevity Experiences to the Blue Zones of Ikaria and Sardinia in 2024. We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. 100NO 567: Back Pain Masterclass and Keeping the Spine Working Better
11/02/2024 Duração: 26minAre you one of the 80% of the population that are experiencing back pain? Do you know the difference between chronic and acute pain? Do you believe that back pain is a normal part of aging and something we just put up with? There is no doubt that as we get older, things start to lose their fluidity and strength and our ligaments are tighter. There is also no doubt that sitting is the new smoking. Join us today as Damo presents a Mastersclass in Back Pain and helps join the dots between the spine and brain connection; the importance of stretching and lengthening and maintenance. We touch on the many beneficial modalities including osteopathy, physiotherapy, myotherapy, massage and the benefit of regular Chiropractic care to ensure that your spine is in line so that the nerves work freely and communicate to the brain more efficiently. The reverse of SITTING is not to STAND, it is to STRETCH. To help with stretching, Damo has shared some of his favourite videos here: https://vimeo.com/564108287/9b0e8a0fe8 https

100NO 566: Ageism: A Cancer on Society or an Overreaction?
04/02/2024 Duração: 23minIs Damo sensitive now that he has turned the big 5-0 or is he actually experiencing ageism? With a 5 in front of his age AND a golf handicap of about 5, is he really too old for a golf tournament or is that blatant ageism? In this week’s episode we question if ageism is actually a cancer on society or are we overly sensitive? We know that people are living longer but dying slower. Is agesim and the limiting beliefs around ageing contributing to signing up for the slowest of deaths? Is an increasing number of candles on a birthday cake each year disempowering people when it comes to how they live their everyday life? Age is not the problem. Ageism is. As David Bowie once said “ageing is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been”. In this episode we discussed Damo’s Crack Your Stress Code. You can listen to the Series on episode 485 and episode 486. Our Longevity Experiences to the Blue Zones of Ikaria and Sardinia return in 2024. We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardi

We discuss cleanses, fasting and detoxes, and the onset of the mythical healing crisis that so many people create for themselves by chasing one trend after another. Ideally you find this conversation somewhat liberating and feel less-inclined to fit a label or trend that is here one day, and gone the next! 100NO 563: Damo’s Citizens Arrest & Keeping People Accountable
15/01/2024 Duração: 23minDamo has started the New Year with a BANG! Or more to the point, a “Pull Over” and “Stop Right There”! No, Damo is not at Police Academy, but I did perform a quasi “citizens arrest” over Summer after watching an incident at his local golf club. The story is entertaining and the lesson is powerful. If we are to build stronger communities around us, we must hold each other to account. The behaviour we walk past is the behaviour we accept. So enjoy the story, and consider the lesson! *** Ikaria & Sardinia 2024 is coming! *** We are in the final weeks of finalising our groups for our Longevity Experiences to Ikaria and Sardinia.
