They finish this season in 5th place, their best finish since 1970, largely due to Kerry Dixon's 25 goals and Kevin Wilson's 20 goals but the defence had a big part to play too with Dave Beasant outstanding in goal ably assisted by Steve Clarke, Gareth Hall, Ken Monkou, Erland Johnsen and Tony Dorigo.Chelsea secured their second trophy in four years winning the Zenith Data Systems trophy at Wembley in a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine, look back at the 1988-89 season.With Chelsea having been relegated via a play off the previous season, Chelsea supporters mood was darkened further by an FA imposed terrace ban for the first 6 matches of the new season. The lack of vocal home support seemed to affect Bobby Campbell's charges with a miserable start of 3 points in the first 6 games leaving them in 20th. But a stroke of luck in a 2-0 win away to Leeds United turned the season around.Chelsea embarked on a run of 27 games unbeaten to win the Division Two title with a record 99 points, scoring 96 goals with a three pronged attack of Kerry Dixon, Gordon Durie and Kevin Wilson. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine.After a disappointing mid-table finish to the previous season, Chelsea supporter's hopes were not high, but little did they know what was in store for the 1987-88 season. If seeing Nigel Spackman and David Speedie leave wasn't bad enough, the performances on the pitch were even worse. Appalling form and injuries to key players saw Chelsea sleep walk toward relegation. But surely they were too good to go down?Unfortunately, even after the sacking of John Hollins and more important Ernie Walley, Bobby Campbell's Chelsea finished in 18th which meant they had to play-off to remain in Division One. A hugely controversial 1-0 win in the home leg against Middlesbrough was not enough to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the 1st leg and the unthinkable happened.

The squad had been strengthened with Steve Wicks, Roy Wegerle and Gordon Durie but changes were a foot and the regime of John Hollins and Ernie Walley was to lead to a fractious and ultimately disappointing season featuring a combination of baffling team selection and formations, poor man management, poor treatment of senior players and dispensing with talented youngsters. For the first half of the season, Chelsea looked strong candidates for relegation only to pick up their form in the New Year, even though most of the team had handed in transfer requests.Finishing in 14th seemed to be the least of Chelsea's problems as Nigel Spackman had already been ushered out of the door and th

And they pretty much pick up where they left off and spend most of the season challenging at the top of the table.For many highlight was the Full Members Cup final win against Man City in March in a nerve tingling 5-4 win. While universally derided as a mickey mouse cup, Chelsea fans treated it as a day out at Wembley and a bona fide cup, the club's first trophy since 1971. But shortly after, Chelsea came crashing down as they so often do, as terrible 6-0 and 4-0 defeats to QPR and West Ham put paid to their title challenge.
