Interview with Duncan Campbell
04/05/2017 Duração: 24minFollowing his first major exhibition in Dublin at IMMA in 2014, IMMA presents a new film work by Irish-born artist Duncan Campbell. Entitled The Welfare of Tomás Ó Hallissy this is the artist’s first film based in the Republic of Ireland and his first new work since winning the Turner Prize in 2014; when he was the first Irish born artist to do so. Originating from research undertaken in the IFI Irish Film Archive, Campbell’s new film commission takes as a starting point a 1960’s UCLA anthropological film study of rural Kerry to investigate and reframe contemporary Ireland. Conor Dowling talks to Duncan about the genesis of the project and the research that underpins the work. The Welfare of Tomás Ó Hallissy screens at IMMA until 7th May 2017

She needs him to perform an ancient invocation ritual, the Abramelin, to summon up Sophia’s Guardian Angel so her wish can be granted. She wishes to talk to her murdered child, a desire that consumes her. The ritual is an extremely arduous one. They are to seal themselves in the house for months as it plays out. As they get deeper into the rite they run the risk of turning on each other, of going mad. But when Solomon finds out that Sophia has not been truthful about her wish, a greater danger threatens them. In the dark, they find that they are no longer alone in the house. They are now in the world of real angels, and real demons. The house is surrounded with a line of salt, it is the only protection they have. They must not cross it, no matter how bad it gets.

Graham Cantwell is an award-winning Irish director and writer, who achieved early acclaim when his short film A Dublin Story won several awards and was shortlisted for Academy Award nomination in 2004. In 2008 he directed Anton (international title Trapped), which stars IFTA winner Gerard McSorley. The film was picked up for distribution at the Cannes Film Festival and has sold to over 40 territories worldwide. It has since been nominated for three Irish Film and Television Academy Awards. In 2010 he directed The Guards for TV3, the first ever homegrown single drama commissioned by the broadcaster, set in the dynamic world of the Irish police force. His last feature, romantic comedy The Callback Queen had a successful cinema release in Ireland and the UK and was nominated for two Irish Film and Television Academy Awards.
