We try out the third game in a series by Jonathan Gilmour & Doug Levandowski, which is all about kids at a magical school. In this episode we tackle creation of the school and out characters. It doesn't take us long to use our love of world building to create some zany details that will surely make this story interesting. Our characters were definitely challenged in this session of play, but we were as players as well. In this commentary, we talk about how although we love the non-linear storytelling method, it was not without its complications. We also touch on the dichotomy of the group coming together but at the same time being on the cusp of something that could tear it apart. Here is the conclusion of this one-shot series. The group escapes certain death and eventually reconvenes to track down Scorpus. But they can't do it on their own and get the help of a most interesting NPC that steals the show. We also give a brief commentary on the system and how it stacks up to other systems we have played. Barely, escaping the threats of the mountain, the characters complete the last leg of their journey on foot, making it to the Animal Preserve. But the trek is still not without some serious complications. As multiple subversive agendas start to come to light it is still unclear how devastating the ramifications will be. In this episode we get to see how conflict works in this system; and there is a lot of it, both external and internal. In true 11th century fashion, our heroes battle knights and dragons, but with the futuristic twist of time travel. And when personal character goals complicate the mission, the door is wide open for more "high-flying", "by the seat of your pants" conflict. Enjoy. As the ship goes down the group is separated. In attempts to save those that are lost, we see two of our character showcase their skills as they were trained for this very type of situation. But the danger is far from over as an approaching storm creates a precarious mountain top situation, and a mysterious figure abducts a character moments before being rescued. Here's a quick commentary episode on our play of Ten Candles. As usual, we dive into what we liked about the mechanics, character creation, and the overall atmosphere that the game creates. We're finishing up our character focused episodes to start off season 3 with a look at to what the journey was like for Sam. Here we see more evidence that the trip wasn't a bonding experience for most of the characters. There are definite seeds of tension that will play heavily in future episodes. However, in the final scene, if appears that when the chips are down, they're all still in this together... mostly. Things really spiral out of control quickly in this episode. Despite successfully gaining a "hope die", most of the characters still fell short of finding refuge in the bunker. The end came quickly for some, while others put up more of a fight. But one by one, the horror of "them" was too much to overcome. There was certainly a lot to digest in this first session of season 3, as well as a lot of "firsts" for our characters 2/3 of the way through their journey to the Animal Preserve. We comment on a first for the players in a different mode of storytelling. We really enjoyed the mystery and intrigue that this latest non-linear format brought to the table, and we hope you did as well. With one candle out, the story continues. In this episode, there are glimpses of "them" in the diminishing light. The character frantically try to make it to the bunker, but there is loss of life and limb as several more candles are put out. We focus on Archi in this episode, and we've got a flashback battle, along with multiple interpersonal confrontations. But despite how that sounds, it's not all "business and no play". Julian's got some pretty jagged puzzle pieces to put together on the journey, and the picture that is being revealed is quite jaded. Or is that just his interpretation? He makes the rounds, hoping to get everyone prepared for the change that is coming. In the final scene, we get a glimpse that there will be trouble as they cross the mountains. Jerr Lan show his concern for each member of the group, healing ails when needed, and stepping up to be a guiding hand through the wilderness. We also learn about some terrifying capabilities of "wild elementals". Jerr proves instrumental in keeping the party safe, and ultimately, through pure compassion, might ensure that the next leg of their journey is a much easier one.
