Sinopse
In October of 2015, Mike Erre launched the VOX Podcast upon a season of struggling with the church's efforts to represent who Jesus is, what he's done, and what he is doing on this earth today. Committed to Talk About Anything, Mike quickly engaged into many of culture's most challenging conversations around the LGBTQ community, American politics, church politics, and Christian culture's catastrophe of marginalizing the very people that Jesus himself would associate with.Learn more at www.voxpodcast.com

425 - Revelation - Part Twenty One: The Church As Witness
16/10/2023 Duração: 01h18minRevelation - Part Twenty One: The Church As Witness. From Daniel to John. Daniel is bound up in the scroll John eats it. Two witnesses as lampstands, which is reference to churches and calling back to Deuteronomy. Martyrs risen from the dead. What is the role of the Church if not raptured? Things are getting weird! First, Mike and Tim discuss the horror in Israel and Gaza. As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. 09/10/2023 Duração: 59minThe Academy of Jesus. Today, Mike and Tim are joined by Pastor! Mentor! Organizer! Advocate! Entrepreneur! Mr. Dave Gibbons! What practices has he changed over time? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. 423 - Revelation - Part Twenty: Captured by Rapture
02/10/2023 Duração: 01h12minRevelation - Part Twenty: Captured by Rapture. One aspect of the content of Revelation that needs to be stressed once again is that, there is no rapture in the book of Revelation (It is supposedly narrated at 4:1, the introduction to the book’s central vision). The book of Revelation clearly teaches, and calls on its readers to pray for, the return of Christ. It is not the second coming of Christ that is absent from Revelation but the alleged rapture of the Church by Christ in a kind of secret prequel to the real second coming. How has it become so convoluted? Where did these ideas like Left Behind come from? How did they get so off course? Pre/Post Tribulation? The Millennium?? First, Mike and Tim read a listener email asking for clarification. When reading the imprecatory Psalms, is the desire to see our enemies' destruction a godly attitude? Should we be 'joining' in with the martyrs and call for God's judgment to rain down on those who do evil? As always, we encourage and would love dis

422 - Revelation - Part Nineteen: Thunderstruck
26/09/2023 Duração: 50minRevelation - Part Nineteen: Thunderstruck. Seals & Trumpets & Bowls, Oh My! These will serve like nesting dolls as they harken back and comment on current events. Last episode we saw the OT Days of the Lord references. Now we see what John was commenting on in his own time. God’s warning judgments through the seals and trumpets did not generate repentance among the nations, just like the exodus plagues only hardened Pharaoh's heart. But the lamb, he conquered his enemies by loving them, dying for them and now the message of the Lamb's scroll reveals the mission of his army, the church. God’s kingdom will be revealed when the nations see the church imitating the loving sacrifice of the lamb. Not killing their enemies, but dying for them. It is God’s mercy shown through Jesus’ followers that will bring the nations to repentance. and this surprising claim is the message of the open scroll that John has placed at the exact center of the entire book. God’s love gives rise to his judgement; God’s ju

421 - Revelation - Part Eighteen: The Day of the Lord
18/09/2023 Duração: 01h48sIMPORTANT EPISODE! Revelation - Part Eighteen: The Day of the Lord. Understanding the 'Day of the Lord' is key to unlocking so much in the book of Revelation. What was the Day of the Lord? What was it in the OT? How did it connect to Passover? How did Jesus and Peter and Paul reference it? And HOW DOES REVELATION USE IT AND SPEAK OF IT'S COMING??? What do we do with all the violence when we are told of a peaceful and loving God? What is the purpose of the Day of the Lord???? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. 420 - Revelation - Part Seventeen: The Lion & The Lamb
11/09/2023 Duração: 01h16minRevelation Part Seventeen: The Lion & The Lamb. Today we spend some more time in chapter 5 of Revelation, focusing on the imagery around the Lamb who sits on the throne. What language is parodied language of the time? Whose blood is on the lamb? How has that been co opted to support religious violence? What is it actually advocating for? What does this show us about old testament violence and the stumbling block of God supporting and purporting said violence? How do we reconcile victory through defeat and how does it inform our faith and daily lives? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. 419 - Revelation - Part Nineteen: Worship is Political
04/09/2023 Duração: 01h05minRevelation - Part Nineteen: Worship is Political. Today, we look at aspects of Revelation chapters 4 and 5 that deal with worship. How is worship political? How is it counter cultural? How is it an act of resistance? What is John commenting on? How were his words a response to political posturing and worship of state? How do we exist as members of society, but as participants in the Kingdom of God?? What imagery from the OT is john referencing and why? Mike and Tim first respond to push back on the conversation around Christian therapists. What were they trying to articulate about how you find a therapist and were they wrong? 418 - Revelation - Part Fifteen: The Throne at the Center of the Universe
28/08/2023 Duração: 01h16minRevelation - Part Fifteen: The Throne at the Center of the Universe. Epic title. Back to Revelation and a look into the Emperor Domitian, who reigned from 81-96. When Domitian (81-96 AD) became emperor there was significant change in the demand for deification. Domitian was obsessed with his own (and his brother Titus' and father Vespasian's) deity. Augustus once explicitly forbade his fellow citizens to address him with the title “Lord.” He did not want to be master of slaves, but first citizen of the empire. But Domitian ignored his forefather and followed in the ways of Nero….He did not wish to be a citizen among his fellow citizens, but a superhuman being in charge of the destiny of humanity. Coins of the era call Domitian the father of the gods... Domitian insisted on being called "Lord and God" whenever he was mentioned or addressed. How does John address this? What are we to take away? First, Tim shares some troubled times with how our language and words can incite violence against th

How does our involvement in politics effect our faith? What is the matrix by which we measure or remain accountable? 415 - Revelation - Part Fourteen: Sexual Immorality
07/08/2023 Duração: 01h27minRevelation - Part Fourteen: Sexual Immorality. Here we go... Image. Likeness. Desire. Dominion. Human. Purity. Angels. Animals. Holy moly. God created us fully human – not to be animals, not be angels. An animal – physical body, but no spiritual life. An angel – spiritual life, but no physical body. God didn’t not create us angels, nor did he create us animals… Human beings are unique in creation – fully physical and fully spiritual…two distinct realms brought together in humans. So what does that mean for sex? Theological Considerations: Who am I? Beloved by God in brokenness/I am a guest at Jesus’ table Log and Speck - I am deeply broken, too What community am I a part of? I am part of a community that is called to offer hospitality to the outcasts and marginalized - FORSAKING ALL OLD CREATION DYNAMICS I am part of a community has done real harm to LGBTQ+ people - they are wounded deeply and set up in the worst possible state to figure this out (rejected by family and church) I am part

414 - Three Men & a Barbie - with Dr. Timothy Gombis (SPOILERS)
31/07/2023 Duração: 01h14minThree Men & a Barbie. CONTENT WARNING: There is talk of rape culture and suicide. ANNND, SPOLIERS FOR BARBIE!! Today, Mike and Tim welcome the other Tim (Freakin Gombis) to discuss the new film 'Barbie,' by revisiting the conversation "God is Not in Control" (episode 239). What is the controversy about? Is the film too feminist or not feminist enough? What are folks like Ben Shapiro so triggered by? How does our need for God to be 'in control,' shape the narrative of 'control' in this time? How do we manifest 'control' in God's name? How does Oppenheimer fit in? Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds... We also read a listener email dealing with suicide. What is the correct posture and response when we were mostly raised to understand suicide as the 'unforgivable sin?' 413 - Revelation Part Thirteen: Poverty & Riches
24/07/2023 Duração: 57minRevelation Part Thirteen: Poverty & Riches. Some sound issues today as Mike's mic decided to defect... “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write..." This episode we continue our decent into Revelation. Laodicea was an affluent city, located strategically at the intersection of three major trade routes. The city quickly became a banking and trading center, known especially for its woolen carpets and clothing. Also in Laodicea was one of the ancient world’s most prominent medical schools, especially famous for its eye and ear treatments. Scholars have found cultural allusions in this message not only to Laodicea’s wealth but also to the local production of eye salve, the use of black wool, and especially the city’s lack of a good water supply. How does that fit metaphorically? How does Las Vegas fit in? What does the "lukewarm, I'll spit you out" reference have to do with it? There are so many cultural references... where do we fit in? John recognized that the acceptance of Rome’s

412 - Revelation Part Twelve: America the Beautiful?
17/07/2023 Duração: 01h10minAmerica the Beautiful? Today, Mike and Tim fight off a Seth and Mazzy interruption to discuss how the model of ‘Christian Nationalism’ is nothing new. Rome built a civic religion that John rebuked... What exactly does a civic religion look like in this case? How has America followed Rome? What parts of civic life have we ordained? Solemn devotion and allegiance? Blessing of the State? What lens does John offer us to examine? Is it unpatriotic to critique America? How do we as Christians exercise a healthy patriotism while advocating for the Kingdom of God? Has Christianity, as the dominant American religion, been co opted in service to the sacralization of power? How do we take the narrative back?!?!? How do we participate, even with pride, and resist the baptizing of American ritual? How did self preservation become a Christian trait when we follow a sacrificial God? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Always feel free to email in questions to hello@voxpodcast.com, and to engage t

10/07/2023 Duração: 01h09minLetter to Pergamum. This episode, we continue in Revelation and look at a specific letter to Pergamum. What was Satan’s throne? What is the insinuation? What was the temple to Roma? What was the deal with the ‘other’ gods? Balaam? Mouth sword?? Hidden manna??? Who was Jezebel and how did she play into this? How did we mess up Jesus already having blood on His robes? The lamb who has won the battle by being martyred… How did we turn this into a book of war and conquering? Mike and Tim also recap the 4th of July as well as what therapy looks like for each of them, currently As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. 406 - Revelation Part Eight: Empire's Gonna Empire
05/06/2023 Duração: 01h16minRevelation Part Eight: Empire's Gonna Empire. Some very important nuggets here for the contextual understanding of the book. Who were the seven churches? Why were they being written to exactly? Who are the competing gods? How does Augustus, "the illustrious one,” factor in? Roma? How does the language of the time, the myths and exaltations, factor into the writing? Have we lost the plot on subverting the Empire? Are we the Empire?!? As with everything, what is to be extrapolated? What from this chapter is for us? What else do we discern? Also, Ted Lasso! Bathroom remodels! Awakenings!
