Hey Family, When you look around at the world we live in and the problems that so many people suffer from--poverty, homelessness, no way to speak up for themselves--what do you think? Do you have sympathy for those in need or do you turn aside and hope not to see anything too disturbing? God tells us in His word that we are to have a heart for the needy. Hey Family, Every first Sunday of the month we take communion together as a church family. Have you ever wanted to get deeper into your understanding of that sacrament? Communion with Christ is being in union with Christ. During the Last Supper, Jesus established a new covenant in his body and blood. Faith in Christ leads us to commune with him. Come join us this Sunday at 10 a.m. as we learn of the significance of communion in the believer's walk with Jesus. This Sunday we'll talk about what new things look like, and how to start a new year not through following short-lived resolutions, but by being led by the Holy Spirit. I look forward to seeing all of you at one or both of our Sunday services! We'll have our usual morning service at 10 a.m., and then from 10 p.m. to midnight we will celebrate New Year's Eve and welcome in 2018 as a church family. Hey Family, This Sunday we're looking forward to a very special day as we come together with Resurrection Church for a joint service. The Bible speaks about how when Christians are unified, we demonstrate the beauty of Christ. So coming together is a very special thing to do, and this week we get an incredible opportunity to see how two different churches from two different backgrounds can really learn to enjoy unity in Christ. The message will continue our series called WAITING. We'll look to the scriptures that speak about how to handle those moments of life that are very difficult, when the stresses and the hurts keep mounting up. What do we do? Hey Family, Last week we started a new season that looks forward to Christ's birth, and we learned that a time of waiting can be a great opportunity to help us recognize God's power in our lives. In our second week of the series, we're going to talk about moments of difficulty and great pain, while we're waiting and we don't know the outcome of our present circumstances. In those circumstances, one of the most powerful things that could happen, the most wonderful gifts we could be given, the most beautiful experiences we could have, involves comforting words. Comforting words have real power when we recognize the true nature of the person who speaks them. A child scrapes his knee and hears his mother give him comforting words, and the reason that it means something is because he knows her love is true. Hey Family, Waiting is probably the most difficult thing for us to do when it comes to important things in our lives. Whether we're waiting for the verdict of a judge, waiting for our beloved to return after a long separation, waiting for the deal to close, or the pain to stop, or the next opportunity to begin, waiting has always been difficult. That's what the Advent season is all about. The very word Advent means "coming." It was the expectant hope of God's people that the one who would save us would come, and that he would change everything. As we start this new series, we'll be building anticipation towards Christmas. Because it's then that the One we've been waiting for arrives, to save us from our waiting.

Hey Family, Our Thanksgiving Day banquet here at RHOW-Brooklyn was a blessing to many, many people! Thank you very much to all of you who volunteered yesterday. This Sunday we welcome John Fils-Aime, one of our favorite guest pastors, who will be speaking from the book of Joshua. It's also Celebration Sunday, when we recognize birthdays and anniversaries. Always a special day!

Hey Family, This week we finish THE WAR, our series about spiritual warfare. We learned about preparing ourselves with the armor of God--the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, the sword of the spirit, and feet prepared with the gospel of peace. But when it comes right down to it, how does one put on the armor of God every day? Because every day we face battles, situations, circumstances that challenge us. We're going to find out how to put it all together, and the way we do that is through prayer. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 10 a.m. --Edwin

Hey Family, There’s only so much you can take before you snap. Shields are great, breastplates protect, helmets are helpful, but there’s a certain point where you need to be able to strike back. In our series called THE WAR, we’ve been looking at the spiritual armor that God gives us in order to combat any difficult time in our lives. But how, after defending ourselves, do we move forward? The answer is by using the Sword of the Spirit. The Sword of the Spirit is the solution to combating all the noise in our head and the noise that surrounds us in the world . It's the solution to be able to think clearly in difficult times. The Sword of the Spirit is our way of getting through moments that make you feel like you can’t get through. I really look forward to seeing you on Sunday and talking more about this.

Hey Family, How can I get over the depression, how can I cope with my ailments, how can I endure a difficult marriage? They’re all dealt with by picking up the shield of faith. In fact, every struggle, heartache, difficulty and pain that we have to go through can be managed with the shield of faith. But not only are we enabled to go through difficult moments. If we’re going to do something great for God--if we’re a 47-year-old person thinking about going back to college or a 38-year-old woman who’s thinking about having children, for example—if we’re going to do something audacious, something beyond our capabilities, we all need to pick up the shield of faith. In either moments of difficulty or moments of triumph, come to hear how we wield the shield for the glory of God and our own benefit.

There was a lot of discussion after pastor Mark Marchak's message last Sunday. He asked us all to think to ourselves, Am I useful to God, or am I useless to him? I'm glad it made so many people think. This week Pastor Gus will speak on Sunday at 10 a.m. In the midst of our circumstances, pain, and struggle, God knows, sees, hears and responds. There is a God who cares about you, and Jesus comes to rescue us all. So whatever frame of mind you might be in right now, come on Sunday to hear a word of encouragement and hope.

Hey Family, It was great to see so many of you last week and talk about the topic of peace in our lives. No Jesus, no peace, a lot of us already knew. But KNOW Jesus, KNOW peace is what we learned! This week our sermon series THE WAR continues by talking about the concept of faith. What do we mean when we say the word faith? Is it confidence that things will go our way? Or is it that God's word guarantees that what we hope for will actually happen? Many times we use the word faith as though it means having a strong feeling. This is different from what the Bible calls faith. When the Bible says to "take on the shield of faith," it does so with a specific goal in mind: so that we can extinguish the arrows of the evil one. This week we're going to learn how we can use the faith that God has bestowed upon us in Christ to experience a greater level of freedom and joy as we guard ourselves from the deadly thoughts that Satan can throw at us.

Hey Family, All of us struggle with this concept of being a good person. We tell ourselves that we're not that bad, we compare ourselves to people who are worse, we try to persuade ourselves with whatever evidence we have that we are good people... but this is a losing battle. Our goodness is not found in our actions, in our station in life, even with how many people we help. It's not found in anything we do but in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. So am I good? No. But there was one who was good for me, and it's his righteousness that I put on, and therefore I'm able to walk with head held high, not with shame, guilt, and regret, but walking in His goodness. Hey Family, Truth is not something in our culture that is elevated or celebrated. Far too many people play loose and easy with the meaning of "truth." But God in His word calls us to speak the truth, to walk in the truth, and to worship the truth, for He is the truth. Last week we started a series called THE WAR, in which we're learning about the defenses we've been given to fight the unseen forces that can ruin our lives. "I feel like I'll never get past this issue . . . It's got me down . . . I'll never get victory over this area of my life". These are some of the common phrases people use when they feel that they just can't win against some hangup, addiction, or weakness in their lives. The fact is, we all deal with issues that we think will get the best of us and will just beat us every time. And we have proof, because we look at our past and see how we've done against these habits and hangups, and we feel like there will never be a time when we get great victory. God knows we're all going to experience this one way or another, so he's given us armor to be able to defend ourselves from the attacks of evil. Hey Family, This week we continue with our series titled Gods at War, which is bound to open your eyes. When we struggle with certain problems in life, we tend to focus on getting rid of the visible symptoms of trouble--cracks in our relationships, a lack of stability in our work life, feeling out of control in various situations. But what we're going to be learning over the next few weeks is that nothing will truly change until we look at the ROOT of the problem, not the FRUIT of the problem.
