We look back at Iowa’s convincing win over Indiana last weekend and Julian gives his thoughts on the line play. Then we dive into the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones coming up on Saturday afternoon in Ames. Iowa football is back! The Hawkeyes are set to open the 2021 season on Saturday afternoon against Indiana and Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo preview the contest. Welcome to the Chuck Long Podcast. Each week Chuck Long and Tom Kakert will discuss Iowa football, the Big Ten, and college football. This week in our first podcast, Long takes us inside what it’s like for a coach during fall camp and what you are trying to accomplish. We also discuss the growth of private quarterback coaches and the changes we have seen in the Iowa offense the last two years.

Hawkeye baseball head coach Rick Heller joins the podcast to talk about the state of Iowa being the center of the baseball universe last week and what it was like to be at the Field of Dreams game. It’s a special edition of the podcast as we are joined by Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker. With camp set to get underway later this week, we discuss all of Iowa’s defensive position groups with Parker. We also discuss his options for the Raider defense and the Cash position and if there are rules that he thinks hurt the defense and frustrate him. Lastly, we discuss why he has stayed at Iowa for the entire Ferentz era and what he looks for from recruits to play in the secondary.

It was a very good night for Iowa basketball with Joe Wieskamp and Luka Garza both being selected. We brought on Scott Dochterman from The Athletic on to discuss the impact it will have on Iowa basketball. We also discuss the Iowa football field name change to honor Duke Slater, a long look at college football expansion and what the Big Ten might do, and then we wrap up with some storylines to watch heading into the start of Iowa football camp next week.

Big Ten Media Days are in the books, so it’s time to discuss what we learned at the annual gathering. John Bohenkamp and Tom Kakert look back at the two days and assess what we thought of the event and Kevin Warren’s speech. We also dive into potential Big Ten expansion targets. Kirk Ferentz talked about Iowa’s vaccination rates for the football team and we look at how that low number could impact this season and how he responded to the slow start to Iowa football recruiting in the Class of 2022. Finally, we discuss John’s recent visit with Fran McCaffery and some Iowa hoops.

Is the Iowa football program in a recruiting slump? Is it time to panic about the Class of 2022? We open the show this week discussing those topics and some of our theories as to why Iowa didn’t get a favorable result from the big recruiting weekend in late June. We also talk about what Iowa’s options are moving forward in recruiting. The world of college athletics officially changes on July 1st. Student-athletes are now allowed to profit off their name, image, and likeness. We discuss what all that means. Also, Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo look back at a big football recruiting weekend for the Hawkeyes and when some verbal commitments might be coming. We talk some hoops recruiting and a little basketball news.
