Across the Atlantic in the British West Indies a close cousin of Highlife was created, starting in the small coastal islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso music dates back to the earliest decades of the 20th centuryt, and has long been synonymous with the yearly Carnival celebrations held in the islands. J'Ouvert (pronounced 'joovey' in the West Indies) is a contraction of the French 'jour ouvert' meaning 'opening day', the first day of Carnival.
