The novel is all about tone -- about the attitude and perspective of Holden -- his angst and his worries.The whole idea of adolescence was new when The Catcher in the Rye came out, and Salinger tried to capture it in this novel. From Holden's point of view, everything is either depressing, phony, corny, or boring. The Catcher in the Rye is often called a coming of age novel.
