Being left wing doesn't automatically mean you are in favour of super-national institutions. On Free speech - Terms such as left and right are pretty much meaningless these days. Terms like Free Speech would not remotely have been seen as associated with the political right (in the 1950s)...it has gradually become the left who are more associated with censorship.
