“Diabetes doesn’t just affect me – it affects my whole family. When I was diagnosed, everyone was diagnosed. It’s a multiple person battle.”- Carmel     When my niece Carmel was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes three years ago at the age of 14, I felt sad and helpless. As a diabetes educator, I wanted to support her and her family but I didn’t know how. I finally realized that the best way to do that was to continue to see Carmel for who she is – a sweet person whom I love very much – and know that diabetes is just one small part of her. However, diabetes is a huge part of Carmel’s day to day life, and her family’s life, too!
