Today, I am sitting down with Joe Nielsen of Ram’s Gate Winery in Sonoma.  Winemakers come from a variety of backgrounds, but it isn’t too often you hear about one coming from Michigan and having to petition a school to allow him access into their newly created oenology program, because he wasn’t 21 years old yet! As General Manager and Winemaker at Ram’s Gate Winery, Joe approaches winemaking from all angles: driving sustainable farming practices, sourcing small-gem vineyards, using family owned coopers, as well as introducing native and whole-cluster fermentation.
