Episódios

  • Hereditary - Monolith Film Podcast

    13/07/2019 Duração: 01h45min

    A great horror movie.

  • Stroszek - Monolith Film Podcast

    15/06/2019 Duração: 01h31min

Stroszek is quite an absurd film. Its dark theme revolves around the inescapability of humanity in the face of our existence, filled with suffering, but its delivery is light and heartwarming. Despite all the bad that Bruno goes through, one can't help but laugh at it all. Herzog employs many techniques characteristic to the New German Cinema movement, letting his shots linger and giving the film room to breath within itself. A few scenes stand out amongst the rest, namely the premature ward, bank robbery, and ending, either aesthetically in the former's case and thematically in the latters'. Unfortunately, apart from those scenes, not much can be said about the film, at least on itself. But amongst Herzog's vast catalogue, we can see that the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Her - Monolith Film Podcast

    22/05/2019 Duração: 01h19min

Spike Jonze's Her presents a pastel world filled with lonely people. Despite its slow pace and even-keel tone, Her is a charming movie that genre hops between sci-fi and romance; although never fully exploring either.

  • The Other Side of the Wind - Monolith Film Podcast

    22/05/2019 Duração: 01h15min

A look into Orson Welles' final film, the posthumously edited and released: The Other Side of the Wind; as well as the Netflix documentary which accompanies the film: They'll Love Me When I'm Dead. Both film and documentary showcase, in their own way, the declining years of Welles himself and his on-screen stand-in while giving form to the anxious changes taking place in Hollywood during the late 60s- the collapse of the studio system and the emergence of youth culture as the dominant creative force of the coming decade.

  • Tetsuo: The Iron Man - Monolith Film Podcast

    15/04/2019 Duração: 01h10min

A fantastic Japanese body horror that takes the best from the likes of Cronenberg and Lynch, and spits out its own metal-industrial unique imagery. The editing is chaotic and absolutely breathtaking, the gore and special effects are brilliant. Everything about this film works together to enhance the theme of metal, industry, and decay, to create a visual experience like no other.

  • Fellini Satyricon - Monolith Film Podcast

    01/04/2019 Duração: 01h27min

Fellini is truly a master at the art. He so effectively blends ancient and contemporary satire. He almost perfectly recreates the sensation of dreams. This film is visually one of the most beautiful things we've seen, and Fellini's technical skills are unmatched.

  • Evil Dead Trap - Monolith Film Podcast

    27/03/2019 Duração: 01h11min

Evil Dead Trap is one of the best horror movies we've seen. Its composition is so well throughout, shot by shot and as a whole, this film is technically very sound. With a healthy amount of references to the horror greats that preceded it, along with the excellent manipulation of tension and release, you can tell these guys really love horror.

  • Joshy - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 59min

A mellow look into the individuals grieving process, and the importance of connection and openness with the people around you. Mostly driven by the characters interactions, plot taking a back seat, Baena does a good job at expressing the passive emotions of people dealing with shit. Despite the heavy subject matter, the cast and mostly improvised dialogue lend to a lighthearted, funny and ultimately touching story.

  • Rubber - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h01min

It's worth the watch, genuinely funny and quite enjoyable, the film is by no means bad. It is a decent satire on the nature of audiences, and the film industry in a larger sense. But definitely a flawed product.

  • Spring Breakers - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h25min

An insanely effective critique of popular culture, completely tearing apart the reality of the audience this film targeted, while also being a love letter to that very same culture, and a testament to religious experience despite the origin of said experience. And on top of all that, this film is so beautifully stylish, Harmony Korine is seriously talented.

  • Tropical Malady - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h46s

Unfortunately the version we viewed was if a lower quality than this movie deserves. As a result, some of us felt like it was lacking technically. Otherwise, it is beautiful tale of parallel love stories. Both allegorical and analogous. Even cyclical.

  • Clueless - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 54min

Clueless is a fantastic satire of everything it appears to be. It is also an insanely efficient novel adaptation, one of the best out there. Heckerling did a great job with the writing and directing, packing this thing full of irony and visual humour. Honestly, it's just a really good movie.

  • Swiss Army Man - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 53min

An excellent film that using humour in the lowest common denominator to craft a beautiful and sentimental story about human relationships. The Daniels' experience with music videos helps to create an extremely dynamic movie that is as touching as it gets.

  • Only God Forgives - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h20min

All style no substance? Or maybe just distracted by how tasty the style is, cause boy is there some juicy substance in this film. Seriously though, this is an excellent movie. Refn has crazy control over every aspect of his films, and he always creates fantastic experiences.

  • The Killing of a Chinese Bookie - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h03min

A stunning film, Cassavetes captures the protagonist's emotion in a way unparalleled by any other director. The low, handheld, personal and subjective camera work allows the audience to experience the film alongside Cosmo, the club owner roped into the Mafia by gambling debt. A true achievement on the part of the director, who funded the entire project, one of the first true indie films, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is a sentimental experience about the value of art, and the sacrifices an artist is willing to make for his craft.

  • Cannibal Holocaust - Monolith Film Podcast

    23/03/2019 Duração: 01h18min

More than just gore, a beautiful and technically advanced analysis of western culture and the nature of civilized people. One of the most controversial movies, forcing the masses to face the savagery that society pushes under the rug. Deodato does an excellent job at riding the line between fake and real, making the viewer question every second of the film.
