“My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. 2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, 3 and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,” 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives? 5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and personally drag you into court? 7 Do they not blaspheme the fair name by which you have been called? 8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF,” you are doing well. 9

What makes a piece of news... good? Think about this with me for a moment. We don’t call a newspaper a good newspaper. It’s just a newspaper. Now, something within that newspaper may be good, but only when it’s beneficial to us. So what makes news good is a personal benefit. This same thing is true with the Gospel. The word Gospel simply means good news. Thus the message which the Apostle Paul calls God’s power unto salvation (Romans 1:16) is good news precisely because it’s beneficial to us. But more importantly and necessarily, the Gospel is good news because it’s actually beneficial for all people. I pray you can see this, but if the Gospel is not beneficial to all people, there’s no way we could be sure that it’s beneficial to us at all. What do I mean?

Last week we began a new series through the book of James. As we launched in, we encountered something quite challenging from the start; the express teaching that as Christians, we’re to count the various trials we face as joy—or “all joy” to be more precise. This morning I want to talk about one thing in particular—what I’m calling the process of trials. In our time we’ll cover three things: 1. How we’re to look at trials (what I mean is our disposition toward them). Which will lead into 2. the purpose of trials (what do they do?). And finally 3. we’ll learn what to do inside trials (what to do as we endure). (prayer and patience)

This morning I want to talk to you about a relatively large concept—the concept of unity. In the time we have today I want to define what unity truly is, what it looks like (that is some practical outplay), and also how good it is to God. Unity is not to be confused with uniformity, which is something that often masquerades as unity. I’ve said this for years now but unity is not people coming into agreement with one another concerning God. Instead, unity is what results when people agree with God, together. In this sense unity is a byproduct of submission to King Jesus.
