On Wednesday, the European Parliament approved the EU's migration and asylum pact which had been discussed for almost a decade. The aim of the pact is to reduce irregular migration in the EU, foster solidarity among the member states and accelerate procedures. The directive allows to introduce a pre-selection process on the border to quickly repel those people whose request for asylum is unlikely to be accepted. The pact has been largely criticised.
