Queen Consorts, the Grey Sisters and Lady Cromwell
30/11/2020 Duração: 01h23minWhen we began planning episode 103, I don't think we imagined that it would be a themed episode. This episode we were fortunate enough to have both Elizabeth Norton and Leanda de Lisle on to talk about women, or women near the throne. Elizabeth chats with me about queen consorts (oh the fun!), and Leanda is asked YOUR submitted questions on the Grey sisters. Then I teach you a bit about Elizabeth Seymour (sister to Queen Jane) in A Brief History. And, as a treat to all listeners, everyone gets access to Elizabeth Norton's full answers in "IF I Made You Choose" this episode! As patrons you will now (after this episode) receive early access to the answers prior to the public. Wars of the Roses, Katherine of Aragon and Bess of Hardwick
16/11/2020 Duração: 01h18minThe Wars of the Roses, or the Cousins Wars, were one of the most deadly and tumultuous times in English history, resulting in the death of many nobles. Today, Rachael Dickzen and I talk about some of the key players of the time: Henry VI, Edward IV, the Kingmaker, and Richard, Duke of York. We also discuss the women of the Wars of the Roses, including Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Margaret of Anjou. We take a look at the family tree of Edward III and how that affected history, and we also touch base on sanctuary and quick executions. Then historian and author Heather Darsie joins us again for Ask the Expert. Today’s topic is Katherine of Aragon (and her family), and we ask Heather the questions you submitted on social media. You’re really going to enjoy this one as Heather once again shatters our idea of what actually happened between the sheets with Katherine and Arthur Tudor. Lastly, Steph joins us again to share with you the story of the amazing Bess of Hardwick - you won’t want to miss

Historian Dr. Estelle Paranque on Queen Elizabeth I
17/04/2020 Duração: 01h01min*Warning: This episode contains some explicit language, nothing serious, but don't listen with little ears around. Dr Estelle Paranque is Lecturer in Early Modern History at New College of the Humanities at Northeastern, and an Honorary Research Fellow within the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick. She is the author of Elizabeth I of England Through Valois Eyes: Power, Representation, and Diplomacy in the Reign of the Queen, 1558-1588 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and has published several essays on Elizabeth I, French monarchs, and other European queens. I had the privilege to speak with historian Dr Estelle Paranque on the subject, by the way, her favorite subject, and we discussed everything from her relationship with Robert Dudley, her similarities to Anne Boleyn, and yes, I found a way to discuss Thomas Seymour - because, let’s be honest, you can’t talk about Elizabeth’s early years without discussing Thomas. Tudor Medicine with Historian Seamus O'Caellaigh
05/04/2020 Duração: 54minHenry VIII lived for 55 years and had many health issues, especially toward the end of his reign; But that doesn’t mean he was a healthy man prior to that. Henry’s own interest in remedies and prescriptions were quite magnificent as well. The health of the King was quite often public knowledge, and as you’ll discover in this episode, even his bowel movements were written about. Royals, like today, were celebrities - to be associated with the King could bring one wealth and power, and we know that Henry VIII raised men who other monarchs may not have….because he was paranoid and had issues trusting people. It is easy for us, living in the 21st century, to take for granted modern medicine. My guest today is historian, Seamus O'Caellaigh. Seamus is the author of Pustules, Pestilence and Pain: Tudor Treatments and Ailments of Henry VIII. -- SHOW NOTES WITH UROSCOPY WHEEL -- Written by: Rebecca Larson Voiced by: Rebecca Larson & Seamus O'Caellaigh Produced by: Rebecca Larson Imaging by: Tr
