Martin and Lewis were an American comedy duo, comprising singer Dean Martin (as the “straight man”) and comedian Jerry Lewis (as his stooge). The pair worked together in nightclubs, on radio and television, and film from 1946 until 1956. Eyes Aloft was an old time radio program which was created on an appeal by the US Army following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. The show was hosted by Gayne Whitman. Ben Alexander was the announcer and the writer/director was Robert L. Redd. The show’s most frequent Hollywood star was Henry Fonda. Each half-hour episode was based on an incident in the life of one of the people who have held the office of President of the United States, but the dialog was written in such a way as not to reveal the name of the President until the last line of the program, when the President would be addressed by name. Betty and Bob was one of the earliest examples of the radio soap opera. The soap opera followed the lives of Betty and Bob Drake. Betty was a secretary who falls madly in love with her boss, bachelor Bob Drake. The two wed and each day, the subject matter dealt with everything from love to hate, jealousy to divorce, murder to betrayal, and collusion to insanity.

Richard Durham created Destination Freedom which premiered on June 27, 1948 on Chicago radio WMAQ to battle the perception of the African American Society as defined by White Supremacists groups. Archie Andrews began on the NBC Blue Network on May 31, 1943, switched to Mutual in 1944, and then continued on NBC radio from 1945 until September 5, 1953. The program’s original announcer was Kenneth Banghart, later succeeded by Bob Shepard (during the 1947-48 season, when Swift and Company sponsored the program) and Dick Dudley. Archie was first played by Charles Mullen (1943-1944), Jack Grimes (1944) and Burt Boyar (1945), with Bob Hastings (1945-1953) as the title character during the NBC years. Jughead was portrayed by Hal Stone, Cameron Andrews and later by Arnold Stang. Stone later wrote about his radio career in his autobiography, Relax… Archie! Re-laxx! (Bygone Days Press, 2003). During the NBC run, Rosemary Rice portrayed Betty, Gloria Mann portrayed Veronica, Alice Yourman portrayed Archie’s mother, Mary Andrews and Arthur “Art” Kohl was Archie’s father, Fred Andrews.

Mr. and Mrs. North was a radio mystery series that ran from 1942 to 1954 on CBS about a married Detective Couple. The wife, Pam, was played by Peggy Conklin, Alice Frost, and Barbara Britton. The Husband, Jerry, was played by Carl Eastman, Joseph Curtin, and Richard Denning. The show was sponsored by Woodbury Soap, and Colgate Palmolive. Mr. and Mrs. North was adapted into a Television program of the same name in 1952. In the TV series, Jerry and Pam were played by Richard Denning and Barbara Britton. Mr. and Mrs. North originated from 1930’s vignettes written by Richard Lockridge. Richard then made a novel, The North’s Meet Murder with his wife in 1940. This eventually became a large series of mystery novels totaling 26. The series came to an end in 1963 when Frances Lockridge died. A Broadway production of Mr. and Mrs. North was made which ran for 163 performances. These performances were at Belasco Theatre.

Set in Harlem, Amos and Andy centered around the activities of George Stevens aka Kingfish, a guy who was always looking for a way to make a fast buck. As head of the Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge, he got most of the lodge brothers involved in his schemes. That put him at odds not only with them, but with his wife, Sapphire, and her mother. Mama, in particular, didn’t trust him at all. Andy Brown was the most gullible of the lodge members, a husky, well-meaning, but rather simple soul. The Kingfish was constantly trying to swindle him in one way or another, but the “big dummy” (as Kingfish called him) kept coming back for more. More often than not, Kingfish would get them both into trouble, but win Andy’s cooperation with an appeal to fraternal spirit–“Holy mackerel, Andy!
