Deardra Shuler talks to New Yorker Sarah Elizabeth Charles, a vocalist and composer whose musical stylings are unique.  The intricacies to her art focus on modernizing classics and composing distinctive originals. Sarah is a member of two performance/recording projects Manner Effect and The Enoch Smith Jr. Trio. She is also the bandleader for her own group, the S.E.Charles Quartet.  Sarah has performed at The Apollo Theatre with Geri Allen, Blue Note NYC, The Iridium, Smalls Jazz Club, Zinc Bar NYC, and New York Couture Fashion Week. She has performed at the and Kennedy Center in Washington DC as a selected member of the 2009 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Composers Residency. Gillette Stadium, and The Northampton Center for the Arts. The Emancipation Proclamation called for the abolishment of slavery and was by far one of the most defining moments in American history. Signed into order September 22, 1862, by President Abraham Lincoln the document freed African and mixed race slaves.  It also provided liberties for them to defend themselves and join the military. History has shown freedom came at a high price. 150 years later, African Americans still contend with racial profiling, unbalanced scales of wealth, escalating foreclosures that cripple communities while ushering in gentrification.  A new paradigm is needed to tip the scales towards equality and inclusion. In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Freedom 2013 Conference will celebrate the historic moment with an all-day symposium, rally and gospel concert featuring Tamela Mann. This switch later proved extremely useful since Walton learned to play and arrange for various instruments, a talent he would hone with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Host Junious Ricardo Stanton speaks with Richard Lundy educator and founder of the Kemetic Institute in Columbus Ohio.  Richard shares his experiences as a teen-aged father who went into the service to escape his responsibilities but who later realized his sons needed him in their lives. He details his efforts to reconnect and become a real father. Out of his experiences he founded the KMT Institute an educational after school mentoring program and summer camp, the Fathers and Sons Celebration which is going into its 17th year and started conducting workshops on fatherhood.
