Howard Kellman grew up in Sheepshead Bay, on East 23rd Street between Avenue U and Avenue V, a block from the border of Sheepshead Bay and Flatbush. He began doing play-by-play for St. Johns basketball while a junior at Brooklyn College, but he couldn't keep away from his passion, calling baseball games. He started calling the AAA Indianapolis Indians games in 1974, and has been ever since (including some years with Carl Erskine as his broadcast booth partner.) Born 1952, Howard will discuss growing up in Brooklyn, what he remembers of those last Dodger days, his recollection of the early Mets years, and how he got into broadcasting. Carl and I have discussed many a things about Brooklyn and the Dodgers over our many episodes on air. We haven't, however, devoted an entire episode to the art of pitching, which I certainly believe to be a conversation worth having when digging deep into the detail of what this television show could be. We'll dig deep into his philosophy, how he altered it from batter to batter, and what he finds to be the biggest difference from the era he pitched in to the era we currently live in. The Bedford & Sullivan podcast is back for its 49th episode! And today, we are LIVE from outside Citi Field! At Noon ET, we welcome back the Brooklyn Borough Historian, Mr. Ron Schweiger. Once upon a time, Brooklyn sat across the river from the City of New York as a healthy and ever-growing city of its own. Then, on New Years Day 1898, the City of Brooklyn, the County of the Bronx, Richmond County, Queens County and the City of New York merged to become what we now know as New York City. All the county governments voted unanimously to merge with the rest...except Brooklyn, which their city council passed by the smallest of margins. We will mostly talk about this consolidation today, or as many Brooklynites of the era called it, "The Mistake of '98." Keepin' goin' with our new weekend routine, The Bedford & Sullivan podcast turns 46 today, the TV Series research process truckin' along strong. Today, we have a Mr. Alan Newmark on the show, who has been on once before and is also a fellow alum of the summer camp I spent 9 summers at as a child. Alan, like my mother, had children go to this Tranquillity Camp as well, and at 95 summers strong, soon to be 96, it is quite the legacy. Mr. Newmark has much to say on his childhood team, and today, we'll focus on the broadcasting element of this thing called baseball (fittingly with the modern NY National League broadcast being watched in the background.)
