Chelsea got back to winning ways and the title challenge got back on track with a 2-0 win against Newcastle on Saturday, but they made hard work of it. Were Cahill and Courtois rested or dropped for Cech and Zouma? A fitful and poor first half made way for a better second half where the team cajoled by Jose Mourinho finally found their rhythm. So the Christmas marathon finally came to an end yesterday as Chelsea washed away their New Year’s Day blues with a win against Watford in the FA Cup. After a poor first half, Jose brought on the cavalry in the form of Willian and Diego Costa and Chelsea ended up winning comfortably. More noteworthy though was the absence of Jose’s untouchables. Has the Special One finally realized that some of our players clearly needed a rest? Better late than never I suppose. Let’s hope he learns to trust the likes of Zouma and Remy for the second half of the season! Jose had promised us youth in the team, but all we got was Rubin Loftus-Cheek for an 8 minute cameo at the end when Jose believed the game to be safe. Will Jose blood the promising youth players or is he too risk averse. And in the light of 2 submissions and a fall or two bookings and a let off for diving in the 2-0 win against Hull, was Jose unwise to declare that Chelsea players don’t dive a few months ago. On Wednesday we battered our bitter North London rivals to maintain our unbeaten home record against them which goes back to 1990. On Saturday we faced a different type of bogeymen – Newcastle – a team that Mourinho has yet to beat in the league. Arch bogeyman, Papiss Cisse scored twice against Chelsea again, and although we threw the kitchen sink at them in the last 15 minutes, we lost for the first time since May – 24 games ago. Well at least all the invincibles nonsense can be put to bed and we can get on with winning points and the title going forward. Chelsea came up against a red & white brick wall against Sunderland on Saturday and a frustrating evening was had by all, especially street fighting man Diego Costa who tried very hard to get sent off and is now suspended for the Spurs match on Wednesday. Were the players tired after 3 games in a week? Were they off their game by 10% or did Sunderland play out of their skins and defend for their lives? Can we expect more of the same from teams now scared of letting Chelsea run away with it? At the end of the day this is a game we might have lost last season and as we stand we are still unbeaten and top of the league and we’ve got Spurs on Wednesday! The podcast recording of the Chelsea Supporters Trust SGM held after the Chelsea v West Brom match on November 22nd. The meeting addressed issues including: ground atmosphere, ticketing, safe standing, the ‘overseas/39th game’ and the reported redevelopment of Stamford Bridge and temporary stadium move. Members also had the chance to ask questions and get their points across to the board. Thanks to a lack of crew in the TV studio we had to return to our roots and do an old skool podcast this week, which seemed appropriate as it is our 300th, yes 300th show! Chelsea waltzed to an easy 2-0 win against the Baggies on Saturday with Hazard, Oscar, Fabregas, Willian and Cost putting on a dazzling display. The game was all over on half an hour when Yacob was sent off for a two footed lunge on Costa. Should we have battered them more than two nil - probably? Do we care so long as we got all three points – probably not! At the end of the day we are seeing some great football, we have broken our record for games unbeaten at the start of the season and of course “we’re top of the league, we’re top of the league! Chelsea shook off their somewhat complacent draw with Maribor last Tuesday with a gritty and intimidating performance at Anfield on Saturday. Liverpool drew first blood rather luckily but after equalizing, Chelsea always looked like winning and once Costa slammed the ball in to the net to make it 2-1, Jose Mourinho’s Mean Machine crushed the life out of Liverpool and the match to take all three points. But it could have been different had referee Antony Taylor given hand ball against Cahill for what might have been an equalizing penalty for Liverpool. So Chelsea grew some balls and got revenge for their defeat last year at Shellsuit Park. Even a red card, the Palace Parrot, Palace Ultras nawty banner and lascivious cheerleaders couldn’t knock them off their stride. In truth for most of the game it was a stroll with 72 % possession and about 10 million passes being something of a record in the premier league for an away side. We’ll forgive them the defensive lapse at the end and focus instead on two scandalous goals which according to some leave Chelsea top of the league! Good to see Zouma, Ake, Luis and legend Petr Cech getting a start in the Capital One Cup win against Bolton in midweek – a match the pundits thought was a close run thing but of course in reality was a stroll. A stroll for yours truly as well as I was lucky enough to be a guest in the Directors Lounge for the match where I had some personal time with the European and Europa Cup and some Blue Cake at half-time. A rather perplexing week! We start our Champions League campaign against Schalke in midweek, strolling it, take our foot off the pedal, allow them back in to the game and get a 1-1 draw. We go to the champions back yard for our biggest test of the season, are under the kosh for most of the game until we get a smash and grab goal that looks like win4479386ning it, only for our greatest ever player to come back to haunt us and score against us to deny us a hard fought three points. It could only happen with Chelsea couldn’t it? Oh well in my book Frank Lampard goals should only ever count for Chelsea which means we really won the game 2-0! Either way we’re still unbeaten, and top of the league with a healthy gap between us and our main rivals. Pretty much a perfect day at the Bridge on Saturday and tempting to say it was all about one man – Diego Costa. With his first hat-trick for Chelsea that’s now 7 goals in 4 games and some feat. But also nice to see Loic Remy get on the score sheet in his debut. Absolutely mental – Everton v Chelsea had a ring of the old skool football match about it in a 9 goal thriller. It could and perhaps should have been all over after 3 minutes as Chelsea roared in to a 2-0 lead. An excellent Everton side just wouldn’t give up, and gave us a good game, but like the fit bird in the nightclub, Chelsea always stayed tantalizingly out of reach. What a game, what a result and what a statement to make. No other sides will put six past Everton at Goodison this season. Nothing quite like being back at home and a top day was had by all before and after with quite a few clearly lacking match fitness in the drinking stakes. Thanks to the Finborough Arms for looking after us so well pre-match. As for the match it was definitely a game of two halves as a determined Leicester side proved hard to break down and were a threat on the break. It looked very much like so many games last season until a Jose rollicking at half time clearly woke Chelsea up and it was pretty much one way traffic for the rest of the game as we had the foxes in the run, as Costa and Hazard made sure of the result in a 2-0 win.
