Episódios

  • Get Shorty (1995)

    11/02/2021 Duração: 23min

In which we love tall women and hate short men. During the post-PULP FICTION renaissance of John Travolta came him playing yet another charmer in the professional field of crime. Only thing time his character in GET SHORTY shared our love of movies. Which means all of his crimes can be forgiven. In fact... most everything in this Barry Sonnenfield adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel can be forgive (even Danny Devito as the world's biggest movie star) because the cast is so damn likable. James Gandolfini as the stunt man with a heart of gold. Delroy Lindo as the nemesis who likes purple suits and pink toilets. And the leading lady of the 90s and currently criminally underutilized Rene Russo. This was fun. You will have fun. Happy Valentine's Day weekend at the movies from TRILOGY IN THEORY! • The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)

    04/02/2021 Duração: 26min

In which we fall in love with Jeff Daniels of DUMB AND DUMBER. The premise of Woody Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO was too hard for your hosts to resist as it leads us to a discussion of choosing the real world or a life in the movies. (And yes, we promise no MATRIX discussion this episode...) However it wouldn't be TRILOGY IN THEORY without some self-loathing: Is heartbreak necessary to make a truly great love story? Mia Farrow's fragility is sweet to one host and scary to the other. And can we only approach the magical realism entries in Allen's filmography? (Shameless promotion time: our MIDNIGHT IN PARIS episode is our #2 most listened to blockbuster. Freaks.) Enjoy our our failed attempt at a movie podcast for the Valentine's Day holiday before our listeners presumably go on to succeed on this most loathsome holiday! • End of the World Speeches

    01/02/2021 Duração: 30min

In which we pick out nice words (the best words as a loser FORMER President once said) for the end of the world. Look, it wasn't enough to just survive 2020. To celebrate moving from one tough year to what looks like a marginally less tough year in 2021 we recruit some of our most charismatic screen icons to talk about endings... and hopefully new beginnings. Mainly we just want an excuse for Ed Harris, Virginia Madsen and George Clooney to talk at us. Okay, so maybe not so much Mr. Harris. He's scary. We're not. Enjoy as we wrap-up our TRILOGY IN THEORY on THE TRUMAN SHOW, SIDEWAYS and UP IN THE AIR! • Up in the Air (2009)

    26/01/2021 Duração: 35min

In which one host finally gives George Clooney a chance. The disrespect to the great state of Kentucky continues as our most handsome candidate is FINALLY off the waitlist for one co-host while the other jeopardizes his marriage with trivia about stunt butts for Vera Farmiga in UP IN THE AIR. We assume this is the type of commentary that Jason Reitman expected in his film about rising unemployment released in the shadow of an economic crisis in America and blah blah blah Anna Kendrick has the cutest cry that... We. Have. Ever. Seen. 2021 is here. Things are looking up. If not we will continue to look up to old-fashioned movie star vehicles and be sad with very beautiful people. Enjoy! • Sideways (2004)

    13/01/2021

Two Guys Who Love SIDEWAYS But Not Wine No expertise to be had on this episode for Alexander Payne's SIDEWAYS. Oh sure, both your hosts have revisited this film many times. One of them fondly remembers experiencing its charms while eating a frozen pizza. So it shouldn't surprise any of you that neither man on this podcast is a wine snob. Or even drinks the stuff. Though I assure you that we do drink. Probably not as much as we should the way things have been going. ANYWAY the movie is great and Virginia Madsen delivers an ALL TIMER of a speech and just thinking of the shenanigans that Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church get into makes the poor bastard typing out these show notes want to watch it all over again. • The Truman Show (1998)

    07/01/2021 Duração: 33min

The Truman Show is depressing. Thank the maker for Jim Carrey though! As we discuss on this episode it takes a light touch to navigate the murky ethical waters of THE TRUMAN SHOW. Thankfully Peter Weir cast a comedian for this part written by Andrew Niccol and what results is a very entertaining film that the Academy could safely ignore. Because it was entertaining! On this episode your hosts about how it could have all gone wrong and that includes placing themselves in the role of Truman resulting in a show that no one would watch. Which is why we podcast. To thousands. All adoring fans. Enjoy! • A Trilogy on New Year's (Snowpiercer, About Time and Carol)

    02/01/2021 Duração: 50min

Episode Notes Well... we made it to a new year. And with that in mind we figured 2020 deserved no celebration of joy but instead a trilogy of loss. So board this episode with us as we decidedly are not in the mood for SNOWPIERCER's shenanigans of violence, the privileged gaining time travel powers in ABOUT TIME and/or Rooney Mara being made to feel bad about falling in love. Yep. This is a trilogy of warm fuzzy feelings that the previous year deserves. Enjoy! • A New Identity for Christmas

    25/12/2020 Duração: 32min

On this special Christmas Day episode we give our listeners those new identities that they probably didn't even know they wanted. HOWEVER for those that listened closely who could deny putting on the catsuit and becoming Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman in BATMAN RETURNS? Or perhaps a dead ringer for Veronica Lake like Kim Basinger in L.A. CONFIDENTIAL? And Leonardo DiCaprio bedding any number of young starlets as... well, Leonardo DiCaprio in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN?Doesn't this already sound better than Christmas 2020? TRILOGY IN THEORY works best when facing such weak competition. • Catch Me If You Can (2002)

    21/12/2020 Duração: 26min

In the third part in our criminal Christmas trilogy we are granted many a gift from the Steven Spielberg classic (that's right, we're old and you're old) CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. These presents include:A great knock knock joke from Tom Hanks that you most definitely should tell to your non-mask wearing family member.Amy Adams with an even deadlier combination of disarming charm when you add braces to the mix.And Leonardo DiCaprio in no man's land of handsome (which ain't that bad, Leo) in playing too young and too old.Okay maybe that last one was a bit of coal but I believe one of the finest actors of his generation will get over it. Hopefully you will as well and come back for your stocking of film nerd neuroses as we wrap-up our trilogy of A New Identity for Christmas in our TiT Holiday Special!Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on PatreonTwitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheoryTweet at your hosts: @projectingfilm & @webistryingLetterboxd: @projectingfilm & @webistryingArtwork

  • L.A. Confidential (1997)

    12/12/2020 Duração: 33min

All we want for Christmas is a lovely lady who looks like Veronica Lake. And not, we can not stress this enough, a gift that resembles in ANY WAY one Kevin Spacey. But he's still pretty good in the Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland film adaptation of James Ellroy's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. So that means our listeners will have to settle for Guy Pearce. Better than a PS5, right?Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on PatreonTwitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheoryTweet at your hosts: @projectingfilm & @webistryingLetterboxd:@projectingfilm & @webistryingArtwork by: @nasketchs

  • Batman Returns (1992)

    03/12/2020 Duração: 29min

Most people say, it's just not Christmas without Christopher Walken as a scheming businessman with great hair. And if you are most people you also listen to TRILOGY IN THEORY.Unless it's a month on Michael Cera, you jerks. But no Michael Cera this month! For it's December which means a podcast is obligated to do a Christmas theme.Every week. This week it's BATMAN RETURNS. And one host is not yet in the spirit. For he hates penguins. And cats. But he likes Batman. Which makes him all the more put out by what Tim Burton is laying down.Merry Christmas Part One!Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on PatreonTwitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheoryTweet at your hosts: @projectingfilm & @webistryingLetterboxd: @projectingfilm & @webistryingArtwork by: @nasketchs

  • The Everything Must Go Trilogy

    26/11/2020 Duração: 28min

On this Thanksgiving we attempt to be thankful for all of the things in our lives.Right before we get rid of them. No, this isn't one of this creepy and extremely privileged YouTube minimalist videos from a wealthy twenty something who is tired of having so much stuff. This is about a man dealing with the trauma of destroyed Nintendo Switch cases and the trilogy of films that got him through it.This is just another month of TRILOGY IN THEORY.Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on PatreonTwitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheoryTweet at your hosts: @projectingfilm & @webistryingLetterboxd: @projectingfilm & @webistryingArtwork by: @nasketchs

  • Hearts Beat Loud (2018)

    19/11/2020 Duração: 28min

The ever cantankerous persona of Ron Swanson is only somewhat to be found in the Nick Offerman starring HEARTS BEAT LOUD... sooooo we try our best to fill that void. But this film is so darn likable.Forgive us for this corny episode and then promptly go to hell for agreeing that it's corny. • Everything Must Go (2010)

    12/11/2020 Duração: 25min

Who knew that a mostly ignored Will Ferrell dramedy from 2010 would unite your two favorite podcast hosts even further in their bromance? Not the filmmakers of EVERYTHING MUST GO but I'm sure they will take this as praise. In fact they would probably gladly accept a podcast (even this one) a decade later trying to share the surprising amount of joy that this film contains. As long as that joy remains in earbuds and not in the front lawn. Because your hosts have a lot of Criterions. And they have learned no lessons from this month's TRILOGY IN THEORY!Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on PatreonTwitter/Instagram/Facebook: @trilogyintheoryTweet at your hosts: @projectingfilm & @webistryingLetterboxd: @projectingfilm & @webistryingArtwork by: @nasketchs

  • Ghost World (2001)

    05/11/2020 Duração: 30min

Listen with great intrigue as two middle-aged men try to understand the whims of teenage girls but do not despair... for these characters come from a comic book! And thus your hosts have a SLIM chance of understanding the motivations of Enid and Rebecca in GHOST WORLD.We are old and we are tired... but we haven't boarded that bus out of town just yet. • Comics Without the Capes and Cowls

    28/10/2020 Duração: 29min

For Halloween we play dress up by dressing down comic book film adaptations.Wait. That sounds insulting.Maybe even sexual.None of that! Just two dorks talking about their own strangely paternal trilogy of comic books on the silver screen.Nothing remotely sexual about this. Just insulting. • Sin City (2005)

    21/10/2020 Duração: 29min

In an episode on SIN CITY these two movie podcasters feel free to commit all the sins at their disposal:Disparaging the director by choosing THE ONE scene directed by someone else as the best (love you, QT)Choosing Josh Hartnett as their favorite character because he's the least Chatty Cathy of all these monologue loving dudes. And debating if it's worth the end of theatrical exhibition as we know it just to stick it to ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL fans. Can you handle all this testosterone saturated decadence? • American Splendor (2003)

    14/10/2020 Duração: 38min

Join us as you discover one host's REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE phase of his youth was strangely influenced by the screen persona of Paul Giamatti. Grabbing the podcast microphone and proudly proclaiming that he is a nerd leaves your other host with no recourse but to play the hipster card and go on the record with being early on the AMERICAN SPLENDOR bandwagon. So, both are dorks. • Road to Perdition (2002)

    08/10/2020 Duração: 27min

In this episode we discover that one host was THE adult in the room back in the summer of 2002; hanging out with the greats of Newman and Hanks.Meanwhile your other host couldn't get enough of some dork named Tobey and the usual comic book tights as seen in a little movie called SPIDER-MAN. This month... that host becomes a MAN. Not Spider-Man. That's for kids.STUPID kids. We are so mature here at Trilogy in Theory. • The B-Sides (Fatal Attraction, Amélie, Paper Heart)

    01/10/2020 Duração: 51min

When one thinks of rabbits in film... the first thought that comes to one's sick mind is FATAL ATTRACTION.When one thinks of dreaming in Paris of lives not lived... one judges the scheming of a duplicitous young lady named AMELIE.And finally when one thinks of Michael Cera you could go with the three prior films we talked about on this very podcast. Or maybe even SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD. But, no... here you will find PAPER HEART.These films all have one thing in common. They were losers in winning a coveted slot on our previous trilogies in theory. But today... they are on TRILOGY IN THEORY.
