Guillermo del Toro’s most recent film is a deep, creepy, personal story with ghosts in it. With excellent performances from top actors, strong metaphorical overtones, and face stabs, this film may be best viewed in context to his previous movies. Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is a stupid fun action flick with big monsters punching big robots in their big faces. It’s a fun, if inconsistent ride through a detailed and expansive mythos. Hellboy II is a sequel with teeth (and tooth faeries). Guillermo del Toro’s follow up to his 2004 comic book flick has a little more of everything. Tons of practical effects, big action set pieces, and big choices for a lot of characters. But do the cartooney aspects outweigh the rip-roaring fun of the movie? Pan’s Labyrinth is a mythical and mystical juxtaposition of two engaging universes. In one, a brooding tyrant rules with a cruel and iron fist – representing, perhaps, one of the greatest villains in movie history. In the other, a cadre of beautifully grotesque creatures guide a young girl through a world falling apart. “Limbo juice! Limbo juice! La la la la Limbo Juice! Fill your cup, drink it up! Everybody loves that limbo juice!” We watched The Devil’s Backbone this week, and were pretty blown away. The film opens up like a blooming flower the more you think about it, and it has a final half-hour that rivals some of the best cinematic experiences. Guillermo del Toro is our next director on Direct! The voting margin was razor-thin, but in the end the stylized Mexican director who has brought us Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Pacific Rim took the crown. Aside from the cinematic experiences he has brought us, Del Toro is unique in that he is almost as well known for the movies he hasn’t made. What really endears him to us is his inherent geekiness, and the fervor with which he builds magnificent worlds.
