  • Don't Worry Darling – Welcome to Unpleasantville

    28/09/2022 Duração: 01h19min

Harry Styles over substance? Now that's Olivia Wilde. Don't worry, darling, we're almost Florence Pugh with these puns, even though we're on a Nick Kroll. We promise to stay in our Kiki Layne...we know you Chris Pine for them. That's right, this week we're stepping into a strange and dangerous place...the second film directed by Olivia Wilde! Don't Worry Darling is a psychological thriller that has been the talk of tinsel town since its gossip-fueled premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. But what about the movie itself? Do we spit on it? You'll have to be the judge of us being the judges. • The Woman King – Why It Rules

    21/09/2022 Duração: 59min

Ain't nothin' in the rulebook says a woman can't be king. That's right, this week we're discussing The Woman King, the latest film from Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of Love and Basketball and The Old Guard. Her latest is an action war epic released through Sony and starring Viola Davis as the seasoned leader of an all-female warrior unit protecting the West African kingdom of Dahomey in 1820. Lashana Lynch plays one of her most gifted fighters, along with Thuso Mbedu as the troublesome upstart who just started her training and John Boyega as their contemplative king. We kick off the show with a brief discussion of Clerks III, and we have to apologize for some audio issues that came up during the recording that we couldn't fully fix. • Disney's Pinocchio (2022) – Boy Story

    17/09/2022 Duração: 01h04min

We're getting three Pinocchio movies this year for some reason, so this week on the show we're talking about the one from Robert Zemeckis. Now streaming on Disney+, Pinocchio is a live-action remake of the 1940 classic that gave the mouse house its theme song. But can we see the corporate strings on this, ahem, wooden straight-to-streaming rehash starring Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, and Luke Evans, featuring the voice talents of Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Keegan-Michael Key? Anyway, #JusticeforFigaro. Intro Music: “Daygrooves” by yuhei miura & Kazuki Isogai Links: Follow us on Twitter: Jon Negroni, Will Ashton Check out our Cinemaholics Merch! • Barbarian – Zach Cregger's Twisted Bottle Flick

    14/09/2022 Duração: 58min

Special guest Ryan Oliver joins the show this week for a bonus review of Barbarian, the newest film from Zach Cregger of Whitest Kids U Know Fame and of course, like we all remember in detail, Miss March. The horror film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long, and many critics are considering it this year's Malignant. Is that an accurate assessment? Hell if I know, since I wasn't on this recording and haven't seen the movie. But I'm sure Will Ashton and Ryan Oliver have a wonderful conversation about how I was too scared to watch Barbarian, which is now playing in theaters through 20th Century Studios. • Funny Pages – Is Owen Kline Drawing from His Own Life?

    06/09/2022 Duração: 42min

The dream of the 90s (or early 2000s?) is dead in Funny Pages. That’s right, we’re discussing the feature directorial debut of Owen Kline, son of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates. Co-produced by the Safdie Brothers, Funny Pages is a grimy dark comedy from A24 starring Daniel Zolghadri (Eighth Grade) as a teenage cartoonist who ditches his boring suburban life to try and make it on his own in the city. We open the show with a quick rundown of how you, the listeners, chose Funny Pages as our review this week over Rings of Power, and we think that’s pretty funny (in a good way). • Three Thousand Years of Longing – George Miller Djinned up a New Movie

    30/08/2022 Duração: 49min

We're here to grant your cinematic wishes. Though based on this week's box office, you wished for a different movie...This week we're covering George Miller's latest film since Mad Max: Fury Road, the "existential adult fairy tale" Three Thousand Years of Longing, which stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. We begin the show with some off-topics, including Jon's more positive take on Bodies Bodies Bodies, plus some chit chat around what we should review next week and what we missed in August. We then kick off our main review with a brief discussion around George Miller's filmography before diving into one of the most unusual mid-size budget movies of 2022. Or just movies in general, really. • Beast & Bodies Bodies Bodies – 90-minute Thrills and Kills

    23/08/2022 Duração: 01h19min

Special guest Michael Guarnieri joins Cinemaholics to (in Will's words) "replace Jon Negroni while he's still on his honeymoon for some reason, what a clown" (again, Will's words). First up, Idris Elba! He's in a new thriller called Beastfrom Universal and director Baltasar Kormákur, and it's been getting surprisingly solid reviews considering its release schedule, but are the Cinemaholics going wild about it? Next up is Bodies Bodies Bodies from A24, the much-talked-about dark horror comedy from director Halina Reijn starring Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, and yes, amazingly, Pete Davidson. And last, you didn't think we'd miss a chance to talk about the last few episodes of The Rehearsal, did you? You did? OK, sorry, didn't prepare ourselves for that answer. Regardless, we talk about the last few episodes of Nathan Fielder's mind-breaking "who needs a fourth wall?" HBO series, The Rehearsal. • The Rehearsal – Nathan For You...Or Against You?

    16/08/2022 Duração: 01h07min

The Rehearsal is a new HBO series from the mind of Nathan Fielder, whose Comedy Central show Nathan For Youcontinuously tested the limits of what you can get people to say and do when you put a camera in front of them. Fielder's perhaps twisted mission to break the rules of television has got us wanting to break some rules, too, which is why we're talking about a show this week instead of a movie! • Bullet Train – All Aboard the Murder Express

    05/08/2022 Duração: 57min

A star-studded R-rated action comedy blockbuster that isn't a sequel? Or part of a larger franchise? Without superheroes? From David Leitch, the uncredited co-director of John Wick? And Brad Pitt as the lead? Being funny? And you said this isn't from Tarantino? Or Guy Ritchie? You said it's called Bullet Train? Sony made this?! Are you sure this isn't a franchise? Oh, it's based on a book? Does it read the room? No one seems to care? Oh, some people care? Did she care when she broke my heart? I already know the answer to that question? Impossible to say, regardless? Brian Tyree Henry is in this, too? Intro Music: “Cloud Bossa” by Jazzinuf Links: Follow us on Twitter: Jon Negroni, Will Ashton Check out our Cinemaholics Merch! • Marcel the Shell with Shoes On – The Best Summer Movie No One Watched

    02/08/2022 Duração: 42min

What if A24 made a Toy Story movie? It probably wouldn't be too different from their latest indie darling, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, directed and co-written by Dean Fleischer Camp. Based on Camp's viral YouTube videos from over a decade ago — with Jenny Slate returning to voice Marcel and co-write the screenplay — Marcel the Shell is probably the most millennial movie we've seen lately, but apparently no one else caught it on the big screen this summer based on the box office tally. But before we close out the season, let's discuss your divorced uncle's favorite kids' film. • Nope – Jordan Peele's Don't Look Up

    26/07/2022 Duração: 01h40min

Hold your horses. Special Guest Adonis Gonzalez rides into the show on the internet equivalent of horseback this week to talk with us about Nope, a new sci-fi horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. Is it as good as Get Out and Us? We'll have to discuss. Don't worry, we open the show with a spoiler-free conversation about the film, then we play the Rotten Tomatoes Game and finish things out with a special spoiler section. 19/07/2022 Duração: 01h04min

Special guest Trisha Ashton joins us for the first time to help us review Where the Crawdads Sing, which is the film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Delia Owens. Trisha doesn't just boast being related to cohost Will Ashton, she is also an expert on the book, so she helps us unpack the differences and expectations between the two formats. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya, a recluse in the Carolina marshes who gets caught up in a murder mystery during the late 1960s. Intro Music: “Walking Together (feat. • Thor: Love and Thunder – Why are Critics Love and Hate?

    12/07/2022 Duração: 01h01min

Special guest Bryan Young (/Film, Full of Sith) rainbow bridges their way to the show this week to help us stormbreak new ground on Thor: Love and Thunder, the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fourth Thor film (amazingly). Chris Hemsworth is still Thor, no surprise there, but we do see the return of some other familiar faces — Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Taika Waititi as Korg, and Jane Foster as...the Mighty Thor?! Plus some new faces include Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher and Russel Crowe as Zeus. Is Love and Thunder as good or better than Thor: Ragnarok? Let's find out. We open the show with some general thoughts on the MCU's Phase 4, then dive right into the spoiler-free movie review. Then we of course play the Rotten Tomatoes game and do a quick spoiler-filled section at the very end. It's...thundering time? Hammer time? Eat our hammers. 05/07/2022 Duração: 01h04min

Special guests Matt Serafini and Chris Sheridan join us for Vol. 2 of this week's episode of Cinemaholics. No, they're not speaking gibberish, they're just tying to contain their excitement for Minions: The Rise of Gru, the Illumination sequel to the Minions movie from 2015, which itself was a prequel within the Despicable Me franchise. Well, our despicable three begin the show with an impromptu discussion of Lightyear, which is tanking at the box office while the Minions are cleaning house. So suit up, call your Gentleminions, and we'll see you at the cinema event of Summer 2022. • Stranger Things 4 – Running Up that Bill

    04/07/2022 Duração: 01h51s

Special guest Aaron Dicer checks in from the podcast equivalent of the Upside Down to talk all things Stranger Things. We open this week’s show with some kitchen table chit chat about the future of podcasting and audio content, then break down our general thoughts on why Stranger Things has been such a cultural phenomenon. With all that out of the way, we finally dig into Season 4 spoiler-free, talk about Vol. 2, and discuss the future of Stranger Things with Season 5 on the far-off horizon. Looking for our Minions: The Rise of Gru review and/or Will Ashton? Don’t worry, Will is off assembling a crack team of experts (the Ogre crew) to handle that episode which will be out shortly. • Elvis and The Black Phone – Only a Few Hangups

    29/06/2022 Duração: 01h30min

The Cinemaholics are in the building. Metaphorically. We've got two big films to cover this week, starting with Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, a super long, super glam biopic covering the life of the king of rock and roll with Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in lead roles. Next, Scott Derrickson's latest horror in quite a while just came out, and we're answering the call for The Black Phone, which stars Ethan Hawke and is based on a short story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King). We also open up the show with some box office catchup and how summer blockbusters from the last month or so are faring as we move into July. 22/06/2022 Duração: 01h37min

It's been a while since we did a "counter programming" episode, covering the three movies released this weekend outside of theaters. We opened the show with a topical discussion about Lightyear's weak box office weekend and the overall direction of streaming releases as alternatives to theatrical event movies. Then we slide into our discussion of Spiderhead, a sci-fi thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, which is now streaming on Netflix. After that, we head over to Apple TV+ for our full review of Cha Cha Real Smooth, which stars Cooper Raiff and Dakota Johnson. Special guest and honorary space ranger Charlie Ridgely joins use on the show for a review of Lightyear, the latest Pixar movie and first one to hit theaters since Onward in March 2020. Does the movie go to infinity, or is this franchise beyond its previous luck? Chris Evans stars as the voice of Buzz in this pseudo-origin story of the movie character that inspired the toy, and don't worry, we'll try to explain it. Don't worry, we'll get to that. After premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, critics and audiences are definitely trying to process Cronenberg's latest sci-fi drama, and so are we.
