Australian Writers in China in the 1950s-1960s In this presentation Mr Li will demonstrate why and how Australian writers were introduced into China and shed light on the cultural exchanges between Australia and China two decades earlier before the establishment of a diplomatic relationship between the two countries in 1972. His talk will also examine whether the introduction of Australian literature into China was instrumental in laying a foundation for the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

Jane Golley presents a pessimistic picture of gender inequities in China today, reflected in rampant levels of discrimination against women in the labour force, the Chinese government’s tightening censorship of feminist ideas and activism, Xi Jinping’s campaign to ‘reinforce traditional family values’, declining participation of women in politics, and China’s deteriorating position in global rankings of gender equality.

This presentation draws on recent research on the introduction of the 2015 Law on Associations and Non-governmental Organisations in Cambodia (“NGO Law”) from 2011–2017 and explores its connection to the ‘rule of law’ concept.
