Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S17) The Messenger ﷺ: “If anyone wants the pleasure of seeing a martyr walking on the Earth, look at Talha”. (رضي الله عنه). Some reports mention 14 men (رضي الله عنهم) were with The Messenger ﷺ, some say it was 12, 11, 7. There is no contradiction: the numbers differ as when needs rose, some (رضي الله عنهم) broke away and then returned later. There was 7 Muhajireen and 7 Ansar رضي الله عنهم. Abu Talha رضي الله عنه gets drowsy during Uhud: this was a blessed gift sent from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى showing His pleasure. Others رضي الله عنهم felt it too. Abu Talha رضي الله عنه is not to be confused with Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه. Abu Talha’s name is Zayd Ibn Sahl رضي الله عنه. He was an elite warrior, Badri, paired brother of Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه, he married Umm Sulaym, Anas’s mother رضي الله عنهم.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S16) The Messenger ﷺ titled Talha رضي الله عنه: “Talha al-Khayr”. “Talha the Good”. Whenever Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه mentioned Uhud, he said all credit goes to Talha رضي الله عنه that day. Abu Bakr and Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنهم upon seeing The Messenger ﷺ again during the intense battle, rushed to him, ﷺ. The Messenger ﷺ tells them to see to their Companion, Talha رضي الله عنه who was severely injured and lost a lot of blood, but due to their immense love for The Messenger ﷺ they went to him first. Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه uses his front teeth to remove the lodged helmet chain links from The Messenger’s ﷺ cheek. He lost both his teeth but this only increased him in handsomeness! Talha رضي الله عنه had fallen into a ditch. He had 70 wounds, from swords, spears and arrows, showing he defended The Messenger ﷺ from all distances. اَللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ. Talha’s رضي الله عنه hand was paralysed and he lost his index and middle finger. When the other Companions رضي الله عنهم arrive

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S15) Talha and 11 men from the Ansar رضي الله عنهم form a ring around The Messenger ﷺ. One by one they step forward to defend The Messenger ﷺ whilst heading towards mount Uhud. All 11 men from the Ansar رضي الله عنهم were martyred. One of these men was Ziyad Ibn al-Sakan رضي الله عنه. The Messenger ﷺ: “On the day of Uhud, I looked to my right and saw Jibraaeel (a.s). I looked to my left and saw Talha [رضي الله عنه]”. The Messenger ﷺ: “Should you [i.e Talha رضي الله عنه] have any difficulties on The Day of Judgement, Jibraaeel (a.s) told me that he himself will come to your aid”. This was due to the aid and defence Talha رضي الله عنه gave to The Messenger ﷺ.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S14) On the day of Uhud, The Messenger ﷺ cursed 3 men, then Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى revealed Surah [3:128] (“You ˹O Prophet˺ [ﷺ] have no say in the matter. It is up to Allah to turn to them in mercy or punish them, for indeed they are wrongdoers”). These 3 men later became Companions رضي الله عنهم. When The Messenger ﷺ was in the ditch, he said: “Forgive my people, for they do not know”. Utbah Ibn Abi Waqas damaged The Messenger’s ﷺ lower lip and broke his lower canine. He ﷺ had a deep cut on the shoulder and had 2 helmet links embedded into his cheek. This was an honour for The Messenger ﷺ. Sa’ad Ibn Abi Waqas رضي الله عنه sees Jibraaeel and Mikaeel (a.s) fighting ferociously by the side of The Messenger ﷺ! The false report that The Messenger ﷺ was martyred caused the Muslims (رضي الله عنهم) to react in 4 ways; 1). There was no point in fighting now, The Messenger ﷺ has been killed. Return, regroup and repower at Madinah. 2). They (رضي الله عنهم) regrouped at

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S13) ~10 fighters were by The Messenger ﷺ. This includes Nusayba, her husband Zayd Ibn Asim, and their sons Abdullah and Habeeb رضي الله عنهم. Nusayba رضي الله عنها picks up a shield and defends The Messenger ﷺ. When The Messenger ﷺ looked right and left, she was there… Her son, Abdullah Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهم was the one who delivered the final blow to Musaylimah The Liar - this was vengeance served as Musaylimah was the one who killed Nusayba’s other son, Abdullah’s brother: Habeeb رضي الله عنهم. Amr Ibn Qameeya, the one who struck The Messenger ﷺ, Musab and Nusayba رضي الله عنهم was later killed by a Ram. He died an excruciating death.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S12) The main body of the Muslims were fighting the main body of the Quraysh. The split group, containing The Messenger ﷺ fought against Ikrimah (رضي الله عنه) and his force. The Messenger ﷺ was in a dangerous position. Amr Ibn Qameeya struck The Messenger ﷺ on the cheek and on the shoulder. The Messenger ﷺ falls into the ditch… Musab رضي الله عنه defended The Messenger ﷺ and fought ferociously, ultimately ending with his martyrdom. Musab رضي الله عنه looked like The Messenger ﷺ in his armour, thus when he was killed it appeared if The Messenger ﷺ was killed - this is how the rumour spread. Nusayba bint Ka’ab رضي الله عنها defends The Messenger ﷺ wholeheartedly…

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S11) Some more Companions رضي الله عنهم who are still classed as Badris, but did not physically participate in Badr due to other reasons; Uthmaan Ibn Affaan, Abu Lubaba, Asim Ibn Adee, Haarith Ibn Haathib, Haarith Ibn al-Sammah, Khuwaat Ibn Jubayr, Abu Seeya and Sa’ad Abu Malik (رضي الله عنهم). Talha رضي الله عنه did miss out physically at Badr, however his performance in the next battle, Uhud, showed his determination, and it went down in history. Uhud was fought ~3-4 A.H, making Talha رضي الله عنه around 32 years old. The disbelievers numbered around 3,000, the Muslims numbered around 700. The Battle was initially being won by the Muslims, however the turn over occurred and the situation worsened. 200 horses came from one direction and a group of disbelievers from the other, sandwiching the Muslims. They fought bravely in smaller, split groups. The Battle was divided into 2 arenas.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S10) The blessed pairing: There are 3 views with regards to who Talha رضي الله عنه was paired with in Madinah; Abu Ayub al-Ansari, Ubayy Ibn Ka’ab and Ka’ab Ibn Maalik رضي الله عنهم. The strongest view is that Talha رضي الله عنه was paired with Ka’ab Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه. Ibn Taymiyyah (r.h) endorses this view. One should stand for his brother when greeting him. Not doing so may cause ill feelings in the heart. The one being stood up for should not feel pride in his heart, if he does then he should request the people not to stand for him. Talha and Sa’eed Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهم didn’t participate in Badr due to being sent out by The Messenger ﷺ to scout out the caravans 10 days prior to Badr. Talha and Sa’eed رضي الله عنهم still recieved spoils from Badr and are classed as Badris.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S9) Why did Nawfal target Abu Bakr and Talha? رضي الله عنهم. Zubayr’s رضي الله عنه father, al-Awaam was the brother of Nawfal (thus the brother of Khadija رضي الله عنها also!). al-Awaam passed away early thus Nawfal was the caretaker of Zubayr رضي الله عنه. When Nawfal found out he embraced Islam he put Zubayr رضي الله عنه in a straw mat and placed fire underneath to choke him. Nawfal told him to leave Islam, Zubayr رضي الله عنه didn’t budge, even though he was ~8 years old! Nawfal thus targeted Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم as they were the ones who told Zubayr رضي الله عنه of Islam. Talha رضي الله عنه is returning from a business trip and runs into The Messenger ﷺ and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه who were performing the Hijrah! Talha رضي الله عنه dresses them in Syrian garments and he himself goes to Makkah to sort things final. Talha رضي الله عنه performs Umrah when he returns to Makkah despite the dangerous circumstances in Makkah. Zayd Ibn al Haaritha, Abu Rafi,

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S8) Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was so instrumental as he was very knowledgeable and generous, thus the people followed him so. It can be said that Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was close to bringing the entirety of the Quraysh into Islam. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه has al-Waleed Ibn Mugheera on the verge of accepting Islam but Abu Jahl intervenes. 19 Verses were then revealed… Nawfal Ibn Khuwaylid, the brother of Khadija رضي الله عنها. He was known as The lion of the Quraysh. He tied up Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم to rough them up and give them some harsh words. Thus they affectionately were given the title: “al-Qarinayn” “The Two tied together”. Nawfal was killed at Badr by Ali رضي الله عنه. Our Lion (رضي الله عنه) killed their lion.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S7) Talha رضي الله عنه was of the first of the first to embrace Islam. He was amongst the first 8. A ~15 year old Talha رضي الله عنه embarks on a business trip to Busra, Syria. There, he encounters a Christian monk who says: “Has Ahmed [ﷺ] emerged yet?”. The Monk tells Talha رضي الله عنه to go to Makkah and follow The Messenger ﷺ and to not let anyone beat him to it! It is a tremendous honour! Talha رضي الله عنه returns to Makkah and the people tell him of The Messenger ﷺ proclaiming and that Talha’s cousin, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنهم) has followed him. Talha رضي الله عنه embraced Islam at the hands of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. Many of the Companions, including some of the ten promised Paradise (رضي الله عنهم) embraced Islam at Abu Bakr’s رضي الله عنه hands.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S6) A common query: Did Talha رضي الله عنه want to marry Aisha رضي الله عنها if The Messenger ﷺ passed away? People incorrectly assume it was thee Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه, I.e one of the ten. However, it was another Talha - Ibn Ubaydullah Ibn Musafi رضي الله عنه. (He رضي الله عنه shared the same tribe as Aisha رضي الله عنها). The confusion arises as they shared the same names. Surah [33:53] was then revealed, stating no one can marry The Messenger’s ﷺ wives (رضي الله عنهم) after he [ﷺ] passes away. Talha رضي الله عنه had 10 sons named after Prophets (a.s). Zubayr رضي الله عنه had 10 sons named after Martyrs.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S5) Umm Kulthoom bint Abu Bakr bore Talha (رضي الله عنهم): Zakariya, Yusuf [Who passed away during infancy] and Aisha (r.h). Talha رضي الله عنه says to his wife Umm Kulthoom (r.h): “You are successful lady, daughter of a successful man [Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه]”. Talha’s رضي الله عنه daughter, Aisha (r.h) was of the most learned Tabi’een. Talha رضي الله عنه had something perhaps unique: He رضي الله عنه had 4 wives who were sisters of The Messenger’s ﷺ wives (رضي الله عنهم); Hamna, sister of Zainab bint Jahsh. Umm Kulthoom, sister of Aisha. Fa’ria, sister of Umm Habeeba and Ruqayya, sister of Umm Salama (رضي الله عنهم). Such was how close Talha’s رضي الله عنه ties were to The Messenger ﷺ!

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S4) Hamna رضي الله عنها bore Talha رضي الله عنه Muhammad and Imran Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم. Muhammad Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم was named by The Messenger ﷺ himself! Muhammad Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم was known as “as-Sajaad” due to his immense worship/prostrations. He lowered his aunt, the mother of the believers Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها into her grave. He was martyred in the Battle of the Camel. The Ahlul Bayt (رضي الله عنهم) loved the family of Talha رضي الله عنه: Talha’s رضي الله عنه daughter married Hasan Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم. When Hasan رضي الله عنه passed away, Hussain Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم married her! Such a tremendous honour for Talha رضي الله عنه - he was the father in law of both Hasan and Hussain رضي الله عنهم. Another wife of Talha رضي الله عنه: Umm Kulthoom bint Abu Bakr رضي الله عنهم.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S3) His noble wives: First is Hamna bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها. She was the first cousin of The Messenger ﷺ, and the sister of our mother, Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها. Hamna رضي الله عنها was first married to Musab Ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. After Uhud, The Messenger ﷺ told Hamna رضي الله عنها about the martyrdom of her brother, Abdullah Ibn Jahsh, her uncle Hamza and her husband Musab رضي الله عنهم. Hamna رضي الله عنها supplied water to the warriors at Uhud. A dangerous battle, an even braver woman. Talha رضي الله عنه nobly offered to marry Hamna رضي الله عنها after finding out Musab رضي الله عنه was martyred. She already had a daughter, Zainab bint Musab.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S2) His family: Not much is known regarding his father. His mother is as-Sa’aba bint al-Khadrami رضي الله عنها. She was from Yemen and embraced Islam after her son, but still during the Makkan period. She had a famous brother: al-Alaa Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه. Alaa Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه thus was the maternal uncle of Talha رضي الله عنه. He رضي الله عنه was a scribe. Many miracles occurred which involved Alaa رضي الله عنه… Alaa had 10 brothers, one being Shurayh Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه, thus he was also the maternal uncle of Talha رضي الله عنه.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S1) - The Living Martyr One of the ten promised Paradise The 4 signs of love; 1) To emulate, 2) To learn about [them], 3) To mention frequently and 4) to love what they love. His name and lineage: Abu Muhammad Talha [رضي الله عنه] Ibn Ubaydullah Ibn Uthmaan Ibn Amr Ibn Ka’ab Ibn Sa’ad Ibn Taym Ibn Murrah. Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم were from the same tribe: Banu Taym. They were second cousins, as their grandfathers were brothers. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was 23 years older. Talha رضي الله عنه shares the common ancestor “Murrah” with The Messenger ﷺ. He رضي الله عنه was born 15 years before The Messenger ﷺ proclaimed, making Talha 25 years younger than The Messenger ﷺ. He رضي الله عنه was handsome, of a brownish, wheatish complexion. He had a narrow nose, had lots of hair which was neither straight nor curly. He didn’t dye it. He was of medium height, and he was thin, with a large chest and broad shoulders and feet - thus had an athletic, ripped build.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S61) - Final Session Some of the Companions who were martyred by the plague; Abu Ubaydah, Muazh, Shurahbeel Ibn Hasana, Yazeed Ibn Abu Sufyan, Fadl Ibn Abaas, Suhayl Ibn Amr, Haarith Ibn Hishaam (رضي الله عنهم). Abu Ubaydah, Muazh and his son, Abdul Rahman (رضي الله عنهم) are buried next to eachother in Jordan - an honour for the residents! The Messenger ﷺ: “My Companions [رضي الله عنهم] will be a guide and a light for the land they pass away in, on The Day of Judgement”. The people of Jordan will have Muazh Ibn Jabal! رضي الله عنه. May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى allow us to reunite with him, and be resurrected with him [رضي الله عنه] on that Awesome Day. Ameen.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S60) Muazh رضي الله عنه showed utmost patience when his son رضي الله عنه was martyred by the plague. Muazh رضي الله عنه himself was wounded in battle. On his deathbed, Muazh رضي الله عنه appeared to be uttering something. He elucidated: “My son came to me and told me The Messenger ﷺ, Angels (a.s), Saints and Martyrs will attend my Janazah then take me to Paradise”. The Messenger ﷺ [in part of a report]: “When a believers soul leaves his body, he is like a man out of prison. He roams on the Earth freely”. (This is for the souls of righteous believers). The more pious a person, the more he can roam. The lowest rank [thus every believer for definite] gets to see/know who is visiting them when they are in their graves. You only recognise the person if you knew them in real life however. Saintly souls can roam where they wish. So, what of Prophets! (a.s). The Messenger ﷺ for definite could attend the Janazah of Muazh رضي الله عنه.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S59) Muazh’s رضي الله عنه parting to Firdaus: Muazh رضي الله عنه was on his death bed, his tongue moist with Zhikr - a deed which The Messenger ﷺ told Muazh رضي الله عنه [in their final conversation] is the most beloved to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى: “I offer all goodness to the believer who praises Me when I am taking his soul out of his body”. Thus passed away; The one who The Messenger ﷺ said is one of his best Companions [رضي الله عنهم], an excellent man, the one who fell of the mule thrice with The Messenger ﷺ, the Badri, the most learned in matters of Halal and Haram, 1 of 4 collectors of the Qur’an during The Messenger’s ﷺ lifetime, the one who also gave fatwah therein, teacher of Palestine, governor of Yemen, the subduer of shaytaan, the Muhajiroon from the Ansar, the one whose Janazah The Messenger ﷺ, Angels (a.s) and noble souls [رضي الله عنهم] attended (Even though The Messenger ﷺ had passed away before him رضي الله عنه), the one who
