On June 28, this broader issue of America’s “diploma disparity” took center stage at the 2019 Aspen Ideas Festival, as University of California President Janet Napolitano was joined in conversation by Aspen Institute CEO Dan Porterfield, Chicago Public Schools CEO Janice Jackson and the New York Times’ David Brooks for the panel “Ending Diploma Disparities Can Change the Face of America.” Whitmire introduced the event, offering up lessons and reflections from his time reporting out the book.

In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Aspen Center of Environmental Studies (ACES), this event will trace the legacy of Stuart Mace and Toklat through a conversation with artist Isa Catto and Mace’s son, Kent Mace. Stuart Mace was a botanist who came to Aspen in 1948 and created an ecological and artistic haven at Toklat, which became a foundational component of ACES. AAM education programs are made possible by the Questrom Education Fund. AAM talks and lectures are presented as part of the Questrom Lecture Series.
