Norfolk recently unveiled new bike racks that double as art work and Virginia Beach declared its intention to be a "Bicycle-Friendly City" in the next six years. On today's program, we'll talk with biking enthusiasts about biking conditions throughout the Hampton Roads area. We'll also highlight Virginia Beach City's priority areas for safer biking conditions.

    Women no longer confine their sports enthusiasm to historically-appropriate activities like gymnastics and running. Today's female athletes are diving into sports of all variations. On Thursday's HearSay, we'll talk with representatives of the Norfolk Storm, a local women's rugby team, about the growing popularity of that sport. We'll also talk with team members of a Hampton high school girls' field hockey team whose competitive efforts were featured on MTV's "Made," a show documenting teens working on their goals with the help of professionals.

Gloucester native Carter Catlett Williams and former Virginian-Pilot editor Margaret Edds both lost a parent when they were very young. They've each written a book about the experience of coming to know their lost parent through the letters they left behind (Glorious Adventure and Finding Sara, respectively). We'll talk with each of them about the experience and later in the hour we'll bring you a conversation that originally aired on What Matters with Aniko Tottossy and Ray Evans who both experienced tumultuous times in their formative years. As we reflect on the year and our families during this holiday time, tune in for a special encore presentation of these emotional and compelling stories.

    People are more active as the summer season heats up. And if you stretch too far, that increase in physical activity can lead to back trouble. According to the most recent numbers, approximately 3.5 million emergency room visits are made annually by people complaining about severe back pain problems. "Next to headaches, back pain is the most common neurological complaint in the United States," says certified fitness and rehabilitation specialist Jesse Cannone of The Healthy Back Institute. On Wednesday's HearSay, we'll talk with experts in the field of back care about what surgical and non-surgical options are available to help put that ache to rest.

  • Sea Level Rise: Blue Planet Forum (Award-Nominated Encore)

    Today we bring you a special encore presentation of a program nominated for "best public affairs documentary or program" at this year's Virginia Association of Broadcasters awards on June 24th. This program originally aired in December 2010. It's about sea level rise concerns. If sea levels rise rapidly during the 21st century, as many scientists believe will happen, Old Dominion University would be among only a handful of large, research universities in the United States to face the threat of saltwater intrusions onto its lawns and into its campus structures. It was the topic of the Blue Planet Forum at ODU in December 2010.

  • HIV and STDs - A Population at Risk

    Hampton Roads has some of the highest sexually transmitted disease rates in the nation. That means area residents engaging in unprotected sex are at a higher risk of infection than it is in other parts of the country. On today's program, we'll talk with local experts about the spread of HIV and STDs in our area, which communities are at risk, and what steps are being taken to educate the population. We'll also talk with a local doctor who has just returned from a trip to Haiti, where youth ages 14-24 are a growing demographic at risk of HIV infection.
