Giddy up! It's time for a rootin' tootin' Western with ol' Ethan Hawke! That's right, we're taking on THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016), Antoine Fuqua's remake that you definitely saw posters for, but didn't see. It's our last western film with Hawke for now, until he inevitability hops on the saddle again probably by the end of 2020. With our returning guest, the Frantastic Fran Hoepfner, we talk hating Chris Pratt, when actors make choices, sweating, parallels to A Bug's Life, and roommates. Enjoy and keep Hawke-ing the skies!

Batter up! Just in time for the World Series (I think? Isn't it usually around now?) we have a baseball movie with Ethan in a terrifying paternal role! Our first guest from our second episode about DEAD POETS SOCIETY, LAYLA MUCHNIK finally returns to Hawke Cast to talk about THE PHENOM, a movie you probably haven't heard of. But it's good and Ethan's great in it! It's on Netflix please watch it! We chat about learning to like sports, abusive fathers, Ethan's character's tattoos, bad Netflix movies, and The Good Wife's casting choices. It's freewheelin episode, easy as a Sunday drive where your alcoholic father is screaming at you about how all drugs should be legal. Actually that sounds awful. This episode is much nicer. Hope you're not eating while you listen to this one! First-time guest Roland Watt and returning guest Todd Stark join us to discuss this curious Linklater film from 2006, FAST FOOD NATION! Based on the non-fiction book about the dark side of the fast food industry, this film has a confused tone but some great performances. It's somehow Roland's first Ethan Hawke movie ever! Our guest is the illustrious Arman Avasia, who grew up in Texas with divorced parents, so this film IS his story. Like the film itself, the episode is difficult to summarize. Jeremy Irons stars as a haunted high school teacher who details his tragic past to his uninterested students, in case you couldn't tell this was based on a novel. We talk Irons' inherent homosexuality, Ethan having aged out of high school roles at this point, confusing rules of the flashback realm, Maggie Gyllenhaal's cameo, and more! RICH IN LOVE is the story of a southern family going through changes. Ethan is the love interest named WAYNE FROBINESS, in case you couldn't tell this is based on a very literary novel. Our guest is first-timer HARRISON YOUNG (@harrrithon), noted Hawke-supporter. We discuss the family's home, Ethan's haircut, which characters should have been lesbians, Robert Sean Leonard, and climate change. If you want to watch this, I'll lend you the DVD. Welcome to Southie with Ethan Hawke! Returning friend of the pod KATHLEEN FOGARTY returns to discuss the Boston-set crime drama WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU, a movie that's only okay. Ethan's character is really named Paulie MacDougal, so you know they're going for accuracy. This is a film about family, hard drug use, scenes that barely last two minutes, startling edits, a stronger back half, and a prison in Billerica. Enjoy! And keep Hawke-ing the skies!

One summer can change everything... including the subject of this podcast? Today we are focusing on the work of one MAYA HAWKE, Ethan's daughter who landed a prime role in Netflix's Stranger Things and had a genuinely moving character arc. Corey has never seen Stranger Things so I filled in some blanks while describing Maya's role and trying to decide if she acts and looks more like Ethan or Uma. I think she sounds exactly like him when she gets drugged by Russians, at the very least. This episode contains spoilers for most of Stranger Things season three, especially story beats about Maya's character Robin. She's great in it! Congrats Maya! This show should end with season four!

Ah, Paris! Emily Cohen returns to discuss the strange, sexy 2011 melodrama THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH. Ethan plays a disturbed writer whose affair with a mysterious woman played by Kristin Scott Thomas may be more than it seems. It's a tight 85 minutes so it might be worth your time! This episode contains the first use of censorship in Hawke Cast history! Hope the bleep isn't too loud! Keep Hawke-ing the skies!  

Ethan has three novels. This is the most recent one, RULES FOR A KNIGHT, which is about his fictional ancestor Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke. It's goofy! This ends up being mostly a discussion of the long ago days of Fox's Animation Domination, with some speculation on how Ethan spends his time. Keep Hawke-ing the skies!

No one loves the old west like Ethan! Ryan Duggan returns to discuss a barely-seen Ti West-directed film called IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, in which Mr. Hawke plays a drifter with the best dog actor any of us have ever seen. Seriously, she's so talented! The stacked cast of this film leads us down multiple rabbit holes, including the origin of Marvel's Nebula, Battlefield Earth, a Hawke GIF used by the GOP (boo!), noted lunatic Toby Huss, the GETAWAY conspiracy, and the still-missing Hawke film TONIGHT AT NOON. IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE is a pretty good movie! Rent it off Google or something! And as always, keep Hawke-ing the skies!    

Well here's a weird one! Friend of the podcast Elizabeth Hopkins returns to discuss the little-seen 1995 film SEARCH AND DESTROY, the only film directed by American artist David Salle and produced by Martin Scorsese! Ethan plays cult leader Daniel Strong (Dennis Hopper)'s assistant who gets to slap Griffin Dunne around a bit. We talk cults, the charm of Illeana Douglas, John Tuturro's wig, artistic ambitions, and "a strong female character with huge tits". Keep Hawke-ing the skies!

Everybody, hands up! This is a podcast! We have a new release this week, one that finally made its way to Boston: STOCKHOLM! Directed by the same filmmaker who turned Ethan into Chet Baker for BORN TO BE BLUE, STOCKHOLM is the story of the 1973 bank hostage crisis from which the term "Stockholm syndrome" was born! It's a good movie with a wonderfully cracked-out Ethan performance. Go see it! And keep Hawke-ing the skies!

In January of 2005, one of the darkest years of film on record, Ethan Hawke found himself in a modern remake of John Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. And it turned out to be a lot of fun! Michael Roberson joins the five-timers club of Hawke Cast guests and joins us for a discussion of this 'pretty good' remake. We talk fashion, tertiary characters, fun action scenes, and how the female characters are mostly sidelined for no real reason. Maria Bello deserves better! And as always, keep Hawke-ing the skies!

Today, March 20th, is the second anniversary of Hawke Cast! Ain't that something special? To celebrate, we recorded an episode about one of Ethan's rare TV roles, because leaving anything out at this point is just irresponsible. Unfortunately, this role just so happens to be a voice on Adult Swim's worst (?) show, Robot Chicken. These jokes have aged worse than milk left on a porch. Also Ethan is in it for like 15 seconds. Why did we do this? Don't say we've never done anything for you. Never watch Robot Chicken. But always keep Hawke-ing the skies.

Howdy, folks! It's our first 2019 Ethan film discussion, THE KID directed by longtime Hawke-friend, Vincent D'Onofrio! It a western about Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan, perfectly cast) and his longtime nemesis Sheriff Pat Garrett (Mr. Hawke). It's pretty good! Join us 'round the campfire for some tales of fake beards, director cameos, male shouting, and streaming content trends. And as always, keep Hawke-ing the skies!

What's so bad about drone bombing? Besides, well, everything about it. Ethan is trying to figure that out, while also trying to prevent the absolute decay of his immortal soul, in the 2014 film Good Kill. Zack Bond returns to discuss this Andrew Niccol-directed film about a drone pilot whose conscience is awakened after he kills civilians in Afghanistan from a box in Las Vegas. The film is available on Netflix and is worth checking out, even if you already know drone bombing should be a war crime. January Jones, Zoe Kravitz, and Bruce Greenwood costar. Third time's the Tom? *I am immediately strangled by my brother Paul Dano* For our final exploration of True West, we called up thespian Tom Phelan for his take on the proceedings.
