Much of the Western world is plagued by acts of violence. In cities large and small, surveillance cameras record assaults, murders, carjacking, purse snatching, looting, and shoplifting. Differences in political philosophies have erupted into physical altercations and death threats. Deadly school shootings shatter lives and families. Images of these violent acts fill television news programs and social media posts. As you’ve undoubtedly guessed from seeing more and more houses lit up at night, Christmas—one of the most popular holidays—approaches. Many people probably celebrate Christmas as just part of “normal” culture, but many others surely celebrate it out of what they would call their Christian beliefs. In some religious circles, professing Christians argue that preaching Bible prophecy is irrelevant, or even contrary, to preaching the Gospel message! Bible prophecy may be an interesting topic, they say, but prophecy is not significant to our salvation. Is that true? How far will you go to get healthy? Maybe the best medicine isn't the kind you get from a doctor or a vitamin store. Being healthy and living up to one’s full potential is trending these days. The popularity of gym memberships, vitamins and supplements for the mind and body, and food consumption awareness are on the rise. Technology has even taken advantage of the trend, with devices catering to the health-conscious lifestyle. Society’s quest for a better, healthier “you” has even led to an interest in an unlikely area—spirituality.

There have been many events in mankind’s history that are considered pivotal. A list of relatively recent events would include the First and Second World Wars and the Great Depression. Other significant historical events include severe pestilences like the Black Death and extreme famines and earthquakes. Many of these events are battles, downfalls of empires, or inventions that “change the world,” such as the printing press, electric lighting, the automobile, powered flight, computers, the Internet, or atomic bombs. Being able to accept responsibility for one’s personal decisions and daily actions can seem like a rare character trait, especially in today’s ideologically and emotionally charged atmosphere. When circumstances do not support a desired outcome or a personal right for someone, many present themselves as victims. The field of neuroscience is a fascinating exploration of the human brain and nervous system. It examines how the brain is involved in everything we do—thinking, feeling, moving, learning, and remembering—as well as how it communicates with the body. Neuroscientists study brain development, adaptability, and what happens when things “go wrong,” such as through injury or disease. The brain, the human body’s “control center,” shapes our experiences and actions in physical terms. But is there more to existence than electric and chemical stimuli? The mystery of the future is one of the captivating elements in the mind of a young person as he or she imagines life ahead. Children come to wonder about their personal futures. A young boy may declare that when he grows up, he wants to fly jet aircraft. One of my own sons wanted to operate heavy earth moving equipment. My granddaughter wants to be a princess. As it so often happens, the desires of youth shift to different goals as the youngster becomes more familiar with his or her talents and skills. But, one thing usually remains the same—concerns about the future. Salt is an important commodity, and it has been for millennia. When I was ten, we had a bully named Billy in our neighborhood who threatened to beat up anybody who would cross his path the wrong way. Billy stood a foot taller than most of the other boys and was twice as bulky. Billy seemed to be in a bad attitude most of the time and was always seen pounding his fist into his other hand in the standard bully fashion. No one doubted his threats. “Nothing is worthy of respect. Nothing is sacred. There are no absolutes. Humankind must make its own way.” This widely held belief or viewpoint is an atheistic, materialistic approach to life. If one holds this view, then there are no real restraints on behavior. After all, who cares? What difference does it make? The daily news bubbles over with carnage and shocking acts of violence. In September 2024 in central England, an 80-year-old man was allegedly killed by a boy of 14 (BBC, September 5, 2024). Brutal rapes and murders continue in India (MSN, October 6, 2024). Mass shootings are not limited to the United States (BBC, May 7, 2023; BBC, December 21, 2023; Reuters, September 28, 2023). It is surprising to some that many prophecies foretell the marriage of Christ to His Church. There are references to this marriage in many of the parables Jesus spoke, as well as in the epistles of Paul.
