  • Loserthink with Scott Adams

    09/01/2020 Duração: 32min

If you've been on social media lately, or turned on your TV, you may have noticed a lot of dumb ideas floating around. Such as, “we know when history will repeat and when it won't” or “we can tell the difference between evidence and coincidences.” Wrong! So says our latest guest, Scott Adams, author of Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America and also the man behind the Dilbert cartoon. If we're not careful, Adams says loserthink would have us believe that addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open. Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink's seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it, and will give you scripts to respond when hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the internet, or political pundits.  You'll also learn how to spot the underlying causes of loserthink, like the inability to get ego out of

  • Playing with FIRE

    26/12/2019 Duração: 24min

On the latest episode we’re joined by Travis Shakespeare, director of a new documentary called Playing with FIRE, which follows 35 year old Scott Rieckens, his wife Taylor, and their toddler Jovie as the family decides to embark on a year-long odyssey to understand the rules of the FIRE movement and test their willingness to reject the standard narrative of adult life. When Scott hears a prominent leader and “early retiree” in the FIRE movement subculture interviewed on a podcast, he enlists his wife to abandon everything they’ve been taught about the role of money in adulthood and instead focus on pursuing financial independence.  But doing so requires an about face since their current path has them spending every dime they make living the “Instagram” life in an expensive San Diego suburb, driving luxury cars, and eating at fancy restaurants.  Although everything they are doing is sanctioned by their friends, traditional education, and broad society, Taylor agrees that something is wrong when it becomes clea

  • Year-End Money Moves for 2019

    05/12/2019 Duração: 27min

December is upon us, which means I basically have your attention for about two more weeks max. So while I have you, and as the year comes to an end, it's a perfect time to review some year-end financial planning tips. For such an occasion there's no better person than Michael Goodman from Wealthstream Advisors. And in the interest of full disclosure, not only is Michael a dear friend of mine, he's also my advisor. We discussed a variety of financial planning topics to ponder before you shut down for the holidays, including: Selling assets in your portfolio now versus waiting until next year: Losses offset gains that you have taken previously in the year; if you have more losses than gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 of losses against ordinary income. Take Required Minimum Distributions: Generally, once you turn 70 1/2, you must begin withdrawing a specific amount of money from your retirement assets (there are some exceptions). The penalty for not taking your RMD is steep at 50 percent on the shortfall! Co
