Because Israel had turned their backs on God and the covenant they had made with Him, they would soon experience the consequences that Jeremiah had reminded them of from the Mosaic Law.

Jeremiah's warnings have been rejected and ignored by the people and leaders of Jerusalem around the turn of the 7th century. The abhorrent behaviour was exploiting the vulnerable, and for this, the prophet indicted them with guilt. Yet, Jeremiah could look forward to the time when God would establish a New Covenant through Christ.

Jeremiah prophesied a warning to Israel that they had broken the conditions of the Old Covenant and as such were in peril of reaping its consequences. But if they would return to the Lord they could avert this disaster and enjoy quiet ease. Would they listen to him?
