Generation-z is a generation living solitary lives, hyperconnected to technology but unattached from their families, churches and communities. What we see playing out before our very eyes is the aftermath of separating from the truth God of the universe found in Jesus Christ, the detachment of America from the traditional family bond, and the re-education of a whole new generation of youth who now overwhelmingly reject western civilization. After Greg Epstein, an atheist, was selected to be Harvard university's chief chaplain, he told the Yew York times, "there is a rising group of people who no longer identify with any religious tradition but still experience a real need for conversation and support around what it means to be a good human and live an ethical life." The role of chaplain at a Christian founded school that points away from god is an abomination to the word of God and conflicts with the reality and mission of Jesus Christ-which Harvard was founded on. On December 7th 1988, a massive 6.9 magnitude earthquake devastated the northwestern section of Armenia, killing an estimated 25,000 people. There were two earthquakes that year in Armenia which killed a total of 60,000 people. In one small town, directly after the earthquake, a father rushed to his son’s school only to find that the school had been flattened and there was no sign of life. But he had no thought of turning back. He had often told his son this, “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you when you need me!” Though the prospects appeared hopeless due to the fact that the building was completely flattened, he began feverishly removing rubble from where he believed his son’s classroom had been. I was lost looking for my new job. God was with me and I learned a good lesson about what God tells us through Isaiah 41 regarding those times of confinement when it seems as if we are hostages to something in this world. Upon taking a group of young Christian men on a hike up to the top of Grandfather Mountain, NC, we stumbled across the remains of a 1978 plane crash. It was an exciting find for the boys but then some quite overtook some of them as they realized someone probably perished in the very spot they were standing on. We ran across a park Ranger who explained that the pilot made some errors which led to his demise as he had perished upon crash landing. Todays' episode is a response that I have prepared for the boys in response to this experience. The point is not one of adventure and excitement, but one of LESSONS LEARNED from the Grandfather Mountain plane crash of 1978. Is the Lord returning any minute now? Is the Lord returning next year or in a 100 years? Does it matter?
