USA! USA! Team USA won the World Junior Championships this past week over Canada in an exciting gold medal final. Also, the Oilers went 2-2 on a recent Eastern road swing, the last two games which they dominated – particularly the line of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Pat Maroon. The Flyers have been a bit down as of late, and Steven and Rachel revisit their preseason predictions now that we’re halfway through the 2016-17 NHL season! The NHL was on its annual holiday break this past weekend, but both the Flyers and the Oilers (yes, even the Oilers!) are in a solid playoff position as of the stoppage. Meanwhile, the beginning of the World Junior Championships has Rachel excited as no fewer than nine Flyers prospects are playing in the tournament for various nations. The Flyers winning streak finally came to an end at a staggering ten games this past week, but it was an impressive feat. However, thanks to the Columbus Blue Jackets’ own nine-game winning streak, and to the fact that the Metropolitan Division is the best division in hockey, the Flyers are still only fifth(!) in their division. The Oilers are still in the top three in the Pacific, which in the middle of December is quite astonishing given recent history. Coming soon: the holiday break! And the World Juniors! The Flyers are red hot. Winners of eight straight games going into recording, Rachel’s favourite team made Steven’s Oilers one of their victims this past week, winning 6-5 in a tense and entertaining affair. But thanks to the rest of the Metropolitan Division, particularly the incandescent Columbus Blue Jackets(!), the Flyers are still only good enough to be tied for fourth in the division. The Oilers, meanwhile, have treaded water as of late, but are still just a point out of first in the Pacific, and Connor McDavid is running roughshod through the league. What a week for the Flyers! Five straight wins, and an NHL 1st Star of the Week award for goalie Steve Mason. The Oilers, while slightly less impressive in style, still managed to take five of six points from their last three games. including a rare win over Anaheim on the weekend. It’s almost US Thanksgiving, which is usually the unofficial measuring point to see where teams are at in the NHL standings and what to expect for the rest of the season. As of now, teams like the Oilers, Flyers, Devils, Jets, and Blue Jackets are hovering near respectability. Can they stay there for the rest of the season? It was a rough week for the Hockey Feels crew, where the results of the 2016 US election knocked most of the joy out of life for both Rachel and Steven, and their enthusiasm for hockey and other diversions also suffered. Good thing, too, as both the Oilers and Flyers had less than inspiring weeks on the ice. The Oilers continue to be impressive this season, winning back-to-back games over the weekend despite facing a bevy of injuries. The Flyers lost in Montreal on Saturday night, but also won back-to-back games earlier in the week. But the Columbus Blue Jackets shocked the hockey world with a stunning 10-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens. All this and more on this week’s Hockey Feels! The first regular season meeting between Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews did not live up to the (massive) hype, with neither player registering a point in a 3-2 OT win for the Maple Leafs on November 1. The Flyers have had troubles keeping the puck out of their own net while displaying a knack for putting that puck in other teams’ nets. The Winnipeg Jets hosted the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Heritage Classic on October 23, so to review the event, it was only right and proper to bring back Bastl’s Bytes host (and Winnipeg native) David Bastl to talk about the celebratory weekend. The first few days of the NHL season are in the books, and there is plenty of optimism in Oil Country after a couple dominant offensive wins over Calgary (and one offensively dominant loss at the hands of the Sabres…). Also, the Flyers are burning the midnight oil out on the west coast, making it difficult for hometown fans to follow their exploits, including those of the Flyers’ newest hockey boys in Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov. It already seems like ages ago, but last Thursday, Team Canada won the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Steven and Rachel were blown away by this utterly predictable development, and so devoted some time and energy into discussing the result of this new-ish international tourney.
