An Illinois native, he served as a State Senator, a Congressman, and a U.S. Senator and was on the ticket as a Vice Presidential candidate in 1884. He is widely regarded as the most important figure in the movement to recognize Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) as an official national holiday.General Logan's likeness appears on a statue at the center of Logan Circle, Washington, D.C. and of course right here in Logan Square in Chicago.
