Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Leyland joined the show. Jim loves the additions to the ballclub yesterday and thinks there can be a good morale bump for the team. Jim talked about the mindset he would have as a manager if he didn’t know much about a player coming in. Jim talked about dealing with new personalities and what kind of input he would have in players coming in. Jim talked about writing in projected lineups and things of that nature. He thinks the Pirates did a terrific job at the deadline. Jim raved about the starting pitchers and what that would mean for this team making a playoff run. Jim talked about the pressure being put on Paul Skenes and how he has handled it so far. Jim said there’s no shortcut to a championship and the Pirates shouldn’t be scared of who is facing them. He gave Derek Shelton a shout out for his job to this point. The guys congratulated Jim on the Hall of Fame honor.

The Pirates moves have amped up the expectations for Paul Zeise. Is he right? Is it playoffs or total bust now for the Buccos? The team doesn’t have a schedule reprieve until early September. How many wins are needed to make the playoffs?

Some fans were ready to pull the plug on their Pirates fandom if things were not done yesterday at the trade deadline. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike isn’t in on the DK Metcalf to the Steelers rumors – he said it’s nothing more than chatter. Mike thinks Justin Fields is taking advantage of the opportunity he has right now and maybe it’s in their best interest that he surpasses Russell Wilson earlier rather than later. Mike thinks there is some significance that Fields is getting the first looks with Arthur Smith and Wilson isn’t while he sits out. Mike got into some new technology the NFL may be using as early as this season. Mike commented on the new kickoff rule as we get closer to real games and how there are still ways for teams to work around it.

We are celebrating the moves made by Ben Cherington yesterday. The Pirates got better. Did they do what they needed to get over the hump and get into the playoffs? The acquisitions aren’t superstars, but they will bring a jolt and more offense to a lineup that desperately needs it. How do fans feel about the moves made by the Pirates at the trade deadline? We are closing in on an hour before the trade deadline is here. Are the Pirates going to pull the trigger on anything of significance? It’s a frustrated feeling. Ben Cherington needs to reciprocate the effort that his roster has put forth this season. It is a failure that falls at the feet of Cherington more than anyone else. Greg is holding out hope that there is something big on the way – referencing the moves that were made in the last decade+ when the team was in it. Greg does like the acquisition of Jalen Beeks and thinks it fits a left-handed reliever need. Greg doesn’t think their pitching will die on the vine this year.
